Fencing Competes at New England Invitational

Northampton, MASS. - The men's and women's fencing teams competed in their first tournament of the season, the NEIFC/NEWIFA Fall Tournament, at Smith College this Saturday. The scoring for this tournament was compiled on an individual basis.
Overall, Boston College Fencing performed strongly this weekend. In women's foil competition, senior Michelle Guevera took top honors, finishing in first place out of a field of 44. Senior Epeeist Regina Lennox tied for third in individual epee competition while Kate Boyle took fifth place. Finally, BC's own Meagan Kenny tied for third place out of 40 in the women's sabre to complete the Eagles' string of top 3 finishes. Sophomore Maritza Martinez also performed strongly, pulling in at seventh place.
The men's team boasted a strong performance this weekend as well. Paul Taylor, Greg Shea and Corban Rhodes all finished in the top-10 in foil competition. This was the first collegiate tournament for both Taylor and Rhodes. Seniors Jeff Marston and Zakee Howard claimed 5th and 10th place, respectively, in the men's epee while Steve Sztuk took the bronze in sabre.
The Eagles will compete next at Tufts University in Medford, MA, on Saturday, November 11. Teams from John's Hopkins and Army will be present in addition to the teams from Tufts and BC. Scores will be compiled on both a team and individual basis.
