Fencing Competes at New England Championships

Northampton, MASS. - This weekend Boston College's men's and women's fencing team competed in the 2001 New England Championships held at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. The women's fencing team placed second at the Championships will the men's team pulled in at fourth place.
Lead by strong showings by the women's sabre and epee squad, BC finished behind MIT by a score of 64-70. Making the individual finals were Regina Lennox and Kate Boyle in epee, Jessica Peakes and Becky King in sabre and Elizabeth Lennox in foil.
Senior Greg Shea became the first ever Boston College fencer to win the men's foil individual championships by defeating Michael Kriedman of Brown University in a barrage by a score of 5-3. After losing to Kriedman in the team round, Shea went on to beat Kriedman in the individual final to set up the fence-off for first place. Joining Shea in the individual foil final were teammates Paul Taylor and Corbin Rhodes, both freshmen. Boston College was the only team to place all three foilists in the final. Also qualifying for the individual finals were Jeff Marston in epee and Steve Sztuk in sabre.
In the second string championship event held for non-starters, Alicia Fasi took first place in women's sabre while Meagan Kenny was second. Dimitrios Kotsinonos won the men's foil event and Dave Slocum was third in men's epee.
Next on the schedule for Boston College fencing are the IFA Championships. They will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
