Sept. 1, 2012
BARCELONA, Spain - Sophomore Ryan Anderson had 29 points and eight rebounds as the Boston College men's basketball team lost to Regal Barcelona, 76-65, Saturday night in front of a standing room only crowd in Sant Julia de Vilatorta.
Anderson scored 17 of the team's 28 first-half points. Sophomore Dennis Clifford added 15 points and eight boards. Freshman Joe Rahon contributed 11 second-half points and five rebounds, and sophomore Lonnie Jackson dished out a team-high five assists.
Regal Barcelona jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first 4:14 of the game but BC quickly responded with five-straight points, capped by an Anderson 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two. Barcelona ended the first quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 29-14 lead. The BC deficit increased to 49-28 at halftime. Anderson and Clifford scored all but four of BC's first half points.
The Eagles couldn't close the gap in the third quarter as Barcelona had a 67-47 lead heading into the fourth, but the BC defense buckled down and shots started falling in the final 10 minutes. BC started the fourth quarter with nine unanswered points in the first 3:18 to make it 67-56, then a Rahon 3-pointer cut the lead to 69-61 with 4:51 to play. The Eagles allowed one basket in the first 5:51 of the quarter, but that is as close as they would get as Barcelona held on for the win.
BC has completed its game schedule in Spain and will return to Chestnut Hill on Labor Day. The team will visit FC Barcelona's Camp Nou and Sagrada Família on Sunday.
