Men's Basketball Defeats Mercer, 73-56

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior guard Tyrese Rice scored a game-high 19 points and sophomore forward Shamari Spears tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Boston College to a 73-56 win over Mercer before 4,268 fans in Conte Forum.
Sophomore James Florence and senior Shaddean Aaron led Mercer with 16 points each. Florence also recorded seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.
BC and Mercer were deadlocked at 28-28 at halftime. BC led by as many as five points - 24-19 - in the first half, before the visiting Bears used a 9-2 run to claim a 28-26 advantage with two minutes remaining before the intermission. A Spears field goal with nine seconds left evened the score.
The Eagles scored the first six points of the half - four by Rice and two by Blair - and never allowed Mercer to even the score. BC led 55-47 with 9:36 to play, before the visitors rallied with five straight points to narrow the different to three points.
BC responded with a 15-3 run over the next four minutes to gain a 70-55 lead with 2:37 to play. Rice scored eight points in the rally, while freshman forward Corey Raji contributed four points on a field goal off an offensive rebound and two free throws. Rice hit a long-range three-pointer and converted an old-fashioned three-point play in this stretch.
Game Notes: BC was outrebounded for the first time this season - 45-43 ... Mercer entered the game averaging 84.0 points per game ... BC registered 10 blocked shots - five by Blair, two by John Oates, and one each by Roche, Sanders and Josh Southern ... The Eagles were credited with 20 assists on 26 field goals.
