CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore forward Ryan Anderson recorded career highs with 29 points and 17 rebounds to lead Boston College to an 84-70 victory over FIU on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
Anderson notched his eighth career double-double and had it in the first half with 17 points and 10 boards. Sophomore center Dennis Clifford posted 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting to go with five rebounds and three blocks. Freshman guard Olivier Hanlan and sophomore guard Patrick Heckmann each tallied 12 points while freshman guard Joe Rahon led all players with six assists and three steals.
The Eagles opened the first half with a 12-5 advantage at the 17:13 mark, utilizing an 8-0 run during which Hanlan knocked down two free throws and connected on a jumper.
The Panthers responded with a trio of 3-point baskets over a 1:36 span that cut BC's lead to 16-14. A dunk from FIU's Tola Akomolafe then tied the game with 13:04 remaining in the first half.
From there, two threes from Heckmann sparked an 11-2 BC run that saw the Eagles recapture the lead and claim a 29-20 edge at the 11:03 mark in the opening half. The host Eagles pushed the margin to 13 at 39-26 during an 8-2 stretch that was capped by a Clifford dunk with 6:38 left.
Boston College carried a 49-33 lead into halftime, but FIU jumped out of the gates in the second half with a 10-2 run that cut BC's lead to 51-43 at the 17:57 mark. The Panthers continued to decrease BC's lead, eventually knotting the score at 65-65 with 8:46 left in the game.
The Eagles countered with a 12-0 run over a 4:41 span that gave BC a 77-65 lead with 3:33 remaining in the contest. During the stretch, Anderson had five points and Heckmann had four.
Boston College is back in action on Thursday at 3 p.m. against Baylor in the opening round of the Charleston Classic.
Ryan Anderson recorded his fourth career game with 20 or more points and had his 10th career game with double-figure rebounds ... The Eagles won their season opener for the 10th consecutive season, outscoring the Panthers, 21-9, on second chance points and 42-20 on points in the paint ... BC converted on 30-of-39 (76.9 percent) free throws while FIU made 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) of its free throw attempts.
