Waheed is in his fourth season at Boston College. He joined the Eagles in the spring of 2010 after spending the previous 11 seasons at assistant coach at Niagara University. At Niagara, he served as the Purple Eagles' recruiting coordinator. He was also responsible for the development of the program's forwards and centers.
During his tenure, the Purple Eagles compiled a 206-135 record, including a 126-72 mark in conference play. Niagara earned four postseason tournament berths, including two NCAA Tournament berths, two Metro Atlantic Athletic Championships and two MAAC regular-season titles. Working alongside head coach Joe Mihalich, Waheed helped guide Niagara to four 20-win seasons.
Waheed joined the coaching staff after a successful four-year playing career at Niagara (1995-99). An elite defender, Waheed was also a deadly free-throw shooter during his career.
Waheed graduated from Niagara in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in communications. He earned his master's degree in school counseling in 2007.
A native of Washington, D.C., Waheed played high school basketball at Gonzaga College High School. He averaged 12 points, five rebounds and 2.6 assists as a senior and helped the Eagles rank as high as sixth nationally as a junior. Waheed also played safety on the football team and was the team's most valuable player as a senior.
Waheed and his wife, Nicole, have one daughter, Infiniti (17) and two sons, Akbar III (7) and Jahlil (4).
