Butera with the Gulls

Aug. 13, 2012

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Sophomore Blake Butera came off a good freshman year to play in one of the premier New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) teams, the Newport Gulls, for the summer.

During the 2012 season, he tallied a .267 batting clip and recorded a team-long 13-game hit streak. The infielder led the Eagles with 31 walks and tied for team lead with four sacrifice hits and eight multiple-RBI games. He was third on the team with 32 runs and 29 RBIs and tied for third with 52 hits.

Butera helped the Gulls to a NECBL Championship over the summer. He tallied a double in the playoffs and went .250 on the season with 12 RBIs, 20 walks and four stolen bases.

Q: What is the experience like playing in such a historic park like Cardines?
A: The experience of playing at such a historic ball park like Cardines is really unbelievable. Knowing that you're playing at the oldest park in the country is crazy and the fans pack the stadium every night to make it fun.

Q: What was the best part about playing in for the Newport Gulls this summer?
A: Playing in Newport this summer has been great. The town is so nice and everyone treats us very well. I'm very lucky to have gotten a chance to live and play in such a great place.

Q: What is the biggest difference between summer ball and the regular season?
A: The biggest difference between summer ball and the regular season has to be that you're playing on a team with guys you never knew before the season. Also, since it's after the regular season, you can really focus and work on things you know you need to get better at from the past season.

Q: What do you hope to bring back to the Eagles in the fall that you learned in Newport this summer?
A: I've learned to just relax and have fun this summer. If you're not having a good time playing baseball then it's going to be a really tough season.

Q: What was it like having Eagles teammate Matt Paré on your team? What about playing with different guys from across the country?
A: Having Matt on the team with me this summer was nice because he's the only guy that I knew before the season. It helps you to feel more comfortable having someone on the team that you've already played with.

Q: What are you looking forward to accomplishing during the 2012-13 season with the Eagles?
A: I'm really anxious to get back to school in the fall and start working out with the new team. I feel like we have a chance to be really good this year. I'm looking forward to working hard and trying to help the team win an ACC Championship and make it deep into the postseason.
