Senior OF John Spatola and junior INF Mickey Wiswall have both been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region Second Team.
This is the second such honor for the pair as they were also named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Team.
Spatola, a former walk-on who became a captain, hit 17 homers and drove in 61 runs while batting .316 and stealing 13 bases. His 17 home runs are the third-most in a single season at BC and his 61 RBI are tied for fifth with Wiswall. Spatola had 22 career round-trippers which is ninth all-time.
Spatola was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 35th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.
Wiswall recorded 19 home runs this year which was the most since 2001 and the second-most in a single season. He also drove in 61 RBI and batted .301 with 56 runs, 14 doubles, three triples and seven steals. He slugged a team-best .627 and had an on-base percentage of .398. The 56 runs he scored this season ranks fourth on the single season charts. Wiswall ranks second in career homers (37), third in RBI (152) and hits (208) and eighth in runs (133).
Wiswall was a member of the ABCA Northeast Region Second Team in 2009 as well. He was the second BC player taken off the board during the MLB Draft as he was selected in the seventh round by the Seattle Mariners.
ZAPENAS NAMED TO ALL-ACC ACADEMIC BASEBALL TEAM
Sophomore INF Brad Zapenas was named to the 2010 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative grade point average during his academic career.
Zapenas started all 58 games at shortstop for the Eagles this past season and ranked third on the team in batting (.318) and fourth in walks (23). He recorded six doubles, a triple, a homer, 14 RBI and 36 runs while slugging at a .374 clip and having a .387 on-base percentage. He finished the season with 17 multi-hit games.
