Today's Game ...
Boston College welcomes the University of Notre Dame (43-8-1, 20-3) to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's nine-inning contest both begin at noon.
The Series ...
Boston College rides a three-game victory string over ND - carried over from 2000 - into the 2001 BIG EAST series. However, Notre Dame leads the overall series 12-5. In the 2000 conference regular season meetings, BC dropped the first two contests 12-1, 10-6 on April 8 - 9 in Indiana but rallied behind Steve Langone's pitching and Mike Gambino's bat for the 11-1 victory in game three.
BC pulled out a late-game miracle to clip Notre Dame in the opening round of the 2000 BIG EAST Tournament. Mike Quirk hit a two-out, two-run, opposite field home run in the ninth inning for the 4-3 victory May 17. On the verge of elimination, Brendan Nolan pitched his first career complete-game and the Eagle batters erased a 5-2 deficit for the 6-5 win when the whistle blew. Joe Kealty hit the game-winning sacrifice fly.
In 2000, Chris Rosado topped all Eagle batters with a .625 batting average (5-for-8) against Notre Dame. Jeff Mackor had five hits in 13 at bats (.385), and Joe Kealty's six hits (.333) produced seven runs batted in.
BC's Last Time Out ...
Boston College earned its first series win and sweep over Seton Hall (11-9, 5-3, 3-2) May 5-6 in Chestnut Hill. The three wins extended the Eagles win streak to nine games. BC owned an eight-game victory string from March 3 - 11 of this year, its longest since1977.
Chris Rosado laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt to drive in Vinny Scavone for the 3-2, 14th-inning victory over Seton Hall in game two. BC got a strong start from Matt Lederhos, who gave up six hits and two earned runs in 9.0 innings of work while fanning eight batters. He retired 12 consecutive batters from the fourth to the eighth inning. Mark Sullivan, who entered in the 10th, surrendered only two hits in 5.0 solid innings of work for the win. The Pirates threatened in the 11th when Casey Grimm powered a one-out triple. Brian Leighton was intentionally walked placing runners at the corners before his brother, Kevin, struck out swinging. The next batter, Joe Scott, was also issued a free pass to load the bases before Sullivan fanned Adam Arslanian to shut the door.
After Joe Cuervo came home on a wild pitch in the first contest Sunday, Lederhos scored an unearned run thanks to Brian Macchi's single up the middle, knotting the game at one after one. Lederhos returned the favor by plating Leahy in the third to tie the score at 2-2. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning, but Joe Kealty launched a two-run single during the fifth for the 5-3 lead. Jed Rogers picked up his third win. He gave up three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Sullivan preserved the two-run advantage in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
And the Award Goes To ...
For the second-consecutive week, an Eagle was recognized by the conference. Mark Sullivan earned BIG EAST Player-of-the-Week honors after registering two wins and two saves for a 0.84 ERA (April 30 - May 7). He pitched the last five frames of BC's 3-2, 14-inning win over Seton Hall Sunday, surrendering only two hits and no runs. He struck out seven of the 20 batters that he faced. In 7.2 total innings against the Pirates, Sullivan allowed only six hits and fanned 11 batters, picking up a win and two saves. The junior right-hander notched his other win this past week in the Beanpot Championship. He surrendered only one earned run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work against UMass. Jeff Mackor received the Player of the Week nod (April 22-29).
Go Long ...
Five different Eagle sluggers crushed a total of nine home runs in the weekend series vs. Villanova. In addition to Mackor's three home runs on the day, Matt Lederhos stroked his first and second collegiate home runs Saturday April 28. Joe Kealty and Brian Macchi each added a dinger in the series while Ryan Leahy drove in the game-winning tally on his first home run of the season in April 28's 6-4 win. Earlier in the week, Brian Macchi hit a career-high three home runs in one game April 25 vs. Maine.
Raking in the RBIs ...
During Coach Hughes' three-year tenure at the Heights, six Eagle batters have contributed five RBIs or more in one game. The most recent five-plus RBI hitter was Brian Macchi, who homered three times to drive in five runs on April 25. He also pushed across nine runs at Brown April 5. That was the biggest RBI production by an Eagle since Macchi himself knocked in seven runs (grand slam, two-run home run and sacrifice fly) at Georgetown April 29, 2000. Current teammate Chris Rosado tallied five RBIs vs. the Hoyas the next day (April 30, 2000) on the strength of two home runs and recorded six RBIs in BC's 17-7 victory over Wagner, March 10 of this season. 2001 captain Mike Hubbard's grand slam and sacrifice fly for five RBIs March 9 vs. Monmouth also placed him on the elite list. Then-sophomore Joe Kealty went 3-for-5 with five RBIs against UConn May 2, 1999. In that same year, Steve Langone also plated five runs (Harvard) while Sean McGowan accomplished the feat four times.
Coach Hughes ...
Pete Hughes is in his third season as the Eagles' head coach. He will coach his 151th career game as the BC skipper (89-61-1) on Saturday vs. Notre
Dame. His career record stands at 141-91-1. The 33-year-old coach earned his 100th career coaching victory with a two-game sweep of Vermont on April 12, 2000. The triple-crowned coach took home three awards last year, named 2000 BIG EAST, New England and ABCA Northeast Region Division 1 Coach of the Year.
