April 24, 2001
Today's Games ... Boston College welcomes Northeastern to Shea Field Tuesday April 24. It is the second of three games betweeen the two teams, slated for the 2001 season.
The Series ... Northeastern University snapped its 11-game losing streak with an extra-innings 4-3 victory over visiting Boston College Tuesday April 3. Ben Beck's only hit of the day produced the game-winning run for the Huskies. With one out in the 10th inning, Beck tripled to right center to drive home Coley O'Donnell, who singled off the eventual losing pitcher, Mark Sullivan.
The Eagles outhit Northeastern 12-5 and left just as many runners stranded on base (nine). The hosts scored once in the first inning and twice in the second off BC starter Jed Rogers for the 3-0 edge. Two passed balls, a wild pitch and Omar Pena's two-run double inflicted much harm to the Eagles' cause early on.
Chris Gannon relieved Rogers in the third to spur on an Eagle comeback. The senior southpaw threw 4.0 innings of hitless relief with a season-high seven strikeouts while BC put three runs on the board in the fourth. Brian Macchi, Jarett Mendoza and Jeff Mackor each had run-scoring singles in that frame but Macchi's 8-2 base-running out at the plate proved to be costly.
BC's Last Time Out ... The Eagles went 1-2 at Rutgers April 21-22, however, Saturday's 4-2 victorious decision provided BC with its first win over the Scarlet Knights in five years and third in the 55-year series history (3-12). In that game, Gannon (4-2) allowed only eight hits and one earned run in 9.0 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. After giving up four of his eight hits in the first two innings, Gannon retired the side in the next three stanzas, including three batters on strikes in the third. Rutgers scored a run then loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but Gannon thwarted the late offensive surge by getting Matt Wolski to ground out into a fielder's choice play.
Rutgers stymied the Eagle offense to four hits in the opening game of the series to take the 5-2 win. On Sunday, the third game was scoreless through 4.5 innings until Rutgers erupted with four runs on five hits to mount a staggering 4-0 lead. BC put up a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Jarett Mendoza struck a two-out, two-run single that sent the Rutgers' starting pitcher - and game-winner -, Tom Crohan, to the bench. That was one of eight hits he allowed in his 5.2-inning stint.
The Eagles squandered chances throughout the game, placing the leadoff batter on base in five of nine innings. They matched Rutgers' nine hits in the game. Defense early in the contest kept the two teams close. Jeff Mackor threw out three consecutive Rutgers runners in stolen base attempts in the first four innings. In the second inning alone, two of the three outs were putouts at the plate, preserving the scoreless tie.
Milford's Macchi ... Brian Macchi homered six times in eleven games from April 5 - 18, in which span the junior also accumulated half of his 40 RBIs on the season. Macchi slammed his 15th career home run - sixth on BC's all-time career list - in the Eagles' 6-1 loss to Harvard April 18. He is also one home run shy of former teammate Eric Olson for third in the single season category (11).
It's Good to Be Home ... BC has won five of seven games played in the friendly confines of Shea Field. In those contests, BC manufactured a .459 slugging percentage, gaining 23 extra-base hits (14 doubles, one triple and eight home runs). Captain Mike Hubbard topped all Eagle thieves with four - of 10 - stolen bases. Jeff Mackor allowed only four stolen bases in 10 attempts while also helping BC to five total pickoffs.
Free Ride ... Joe Kealty has been granted first base twice as many times as any one of his teammates. The senior left-handed batter has been issued 23 free passes in 38 games this season and hit by a pitch six times. Through April 9, Kealty landed second in the BIG EAST conference with 22 walks for all games played.
Raking in the RBIs ... During Coach Hughes' three-year tenure at the Heights, six Eagle batters have contributed five RBIs or more in one game. The most recent five-plus RBI hitter was Brian Macchi, who drove in nine runs at Brown April 5. That was the biggest RBI production by an Eagle since Macchi himself pushed across seven runs (grand slam, two-run home run and sacrifice fly) at Georgetown April 29, 2000. Current teammate Chris Rosado tallied five RBIs vs. the Hoyas the next day (April 30, 2000) on the strength of two home runs and recorded six RBIs in BC's 17-7 victory over Wagner, March 10 of this season. 2001 captain Mike Hubbard's grand slam and sacrifice fly for five RBIs March 9 vs. Monmouth also placed him on the elite list. Then-sophomore Joe Kealty went 3-for-5 with five RBIs against UConn May 2, 1999. In that same year, Steve Langone also plated five runs (Harvard) while Sean McGowan accomplished the feat four times.
One-Hit Wonders ... In addition to Erik Olson's superb pitching performance March 29, the last Heights' starting hurler to throw a one-hitter in at least 6.0 innings of work was Andy Sullivan `00, who pitched a 7.0- inning complete game vs. Northeastern May 4, 2000.
Coach Hughes ... Pete Hughes is in his third season as the Eagles' head coach. He will coach his 141st career game as the BC skipper (80-60-1) on Tuesday vs. Northeastern. His career record stands at 132-90-1. The 33-year-old coach earned his 100th career coaching victory with a two-game sweep of Vermont on April 12, 2000. The triple-crowned coach took home three awards last year, named 2000 BIG EAST, New England and ABCA Northeast Region Division 1 Coach of the Year.
