Baseball Hosts No. 1 Florida State
April 12, 2012
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team welcome No. 1 Florida State to The Heights for a three-game conference series. The 2012 National Championship BC hockey team will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for Saturday's 1:30 p.m. game.
Friday's game time is 2:30 p.m. and Sunday's is 1 p.m.
The Eagles (13-20, 4-11 ACC) lost a three-game series to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last weekend and then fell to Harvard the first round of the Beanpot on Tuesday. The top-ranked Seminoles (27-6, 14-1 ACC) swept No. 23 Georgia Tech over the weekend before falling, 6-3, to in-state rival No. 4 Florida, on Tuesday.
The Seminoles lead the all-time series, 16-3, since the Eagles joined the ACC in 2006. BC took its only series in 2009, winning two-of-three in Tallahassee, Fla. The last time the Maroon and Gold welcomed the top-ranked team to The Heights, it took one in a three-game series against No. 1 Virginia. On April 30, 2011, senior Anthony Melchionda hit a double in the bottom of the 11th that scored junior Matt McGovern from first to give BC a 5-4 walk-off win. The Cavaliers earned 17-0 and 4-0 victories in the other two meetings.
Last season, the Seminoles took all three games at home, 3-1, 15-6, and 4-3. In game one, senior Andrew Lawrence provided the only run for BC with a solo homer. Seniors RHP Kyle Prohovich, RHP Matt Brazis and junior RHP Hunter Gordon combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. In the second game, the Seminoles benefited from 14 free passes from Eagles pitching. FSU got the lead runner on base in every inning and it scored 13 of its 15 runs with two outs. In a close game three, pitcher John Leonard was nearly unhittable for the first 6.0 innings, but Florida State tied the game with three runs in the seventh and went on to win.
