Eagles look for third-consecutive win

Eagles look for third-consecutive win

April 3, 2001

This Week's Game ... Boston College meets Northeastern Tuesday April 3 in Brookline, Mass. The Huskies enter their first home game of the season with a 2-12 record.

The Series ... The Eagles split last season's series with Northeastern on May 4 at Chestnut Hill. Andy Sullivan threw a complete game one-hitter to lead BC to the 3-0 shutout in the first game. Sullivan allowed one single (Jody Corcoran) and one walk with two strikeouts. In the second contest, BC knotted the score twice before NU plated three runs in the fifth inning to take the commanding 5-2 lead. BC scored twice in the sixth and threatened with a man on in the ninth, but Ben Beck caught Joe Kealty's slicing fly to left for the final out.

Please Take Note ...

*The Eagles have scored the same or better as their opponents in six of nine innings (147-130 total). BC's main scoring drought comes in the fifth and sixth innings where foes have outscored them 29-25 and 20-18, respectively.

* Chris Rosado was the first Eagle this season to almost complete a cycle, falling one triple shy of the distinction in BC's 8-2 win over Buffalo March 6. Brian Durkin also missed the cycle, hitting a single, triple and home run in BC's 11-4 victory over LaSalle March 11.

Last Time Out ... Senior pitcher Erik Olson threw a career-high eight strikeouts, allowing only one hit to pace Boston College to the 12-2 victory over host Holy Cross March 29 in Worcester. Through 6.0 innings, Olson faced just one more batter than the minimum, walking none and helping BC to retire the side in five of six innings. The senior right-hander bettered his previous career-high of six strikeouts set twice during the 2000 season. All nine starters notched a hit while Eric Wright, Brian Macchi and Jarett Mendoza each had two hits for the Eagles. Brian Durkin went 3-for-3.

One-Hit Wonders ... In addition to Erik Olson's superb performance March 29, the last Heights' starting hurler to throw a one-hitter in at least 6.0 innings of work was Andy Sullivan `00, who pitched a 7.0- inning complete game vs. Northeastern May 4, 2000.

It's in the Books ... Three Eagles climbing up the BC record books include seniors Joe Kealty, Jarett Mendoza and Mike Hubbard. Kealty and Hubbard are currently tied with 155 career hits each for ninth place. Eleven more hits each will tie them with their former assistant coach Brian Sankey (166) at eighth. In the same category, Mendoza ranks 12th (149), two shy of 10th-place Joe Hayward `93. Kealty needs three more runs batted in for his 100th RBI. He is currently neck-and-neck with Gregg Radachowsky `90 with 97 , eighth overall. Another home run for Jarett Mendoza will entitle him to a share of sixth overall on the career home run leaders list, the center fielder currently owns 13.

March Madness ... The Eagles won 10 contests in 16 attempts during the month of March. Their 11-11 record so far in 2001 is par for the course during Head Coach Peter Hughes' three-year tenure at BC. Last season, BC was 13-9-0 overall through 22 games and 1-5 in the BIG EAST. That squad finished the season at 22-11 for a school-record mark of 35-20. In Hughes' inaugural season, 1999, the Eagles fell two games shy of .500 with a 10-12 record in all games and 1-6 mark in the league in the beginning of the season. They too rebounded, losing only nine of their next 26 games to finish at 26-21-1.

Novice Notes ... Josh DiScipio and Eric Wright are two new faces making an impact on the Eagle roster this season. Second baseman Josh DiScipio got the starting nod in both Georgetown contests March 25, living up to the billing by pushing across the game-winning run in game two. He fought off a two-out, full count with seven foul balls before launching a bases-loaded, three-run double to the opposite field to give BC the 7-3 advantage in the eighth inning. BC went on to win 8-6. In the Eagles' most recent contest, Wright not only contributed two hits - including a two-run double - but hauled in a superb foul ball fly in the eighth inning of BC's 12-2 win over Holy Cross.

And the award goes to ... Brian Durkin was named BIG EAST offensive player of the week (March 11) after notching 10 hits in 24 at bats with six RBIs and five walks. On the eight-game Florida road trip, Durkin collected four home runs and one triple for a .893 slugging percentage. He fell one double short of a cycle in Sunday's 11-4 victory over LaSalle. He is now batting .340. The last Eagle bestowed with the weekly award was pitcher Steve LangoneMay 1, 2000.

Logging the K's Matt Lederhos threw 11 strikeouts - three more than his 2000 total - in BC's 8-2 win over Buffalo March 6. Lederhos was the first 2001 BC pitcher to throw 10-plus strikeouts in a game this season. Paul Knapic retired nine FAU batters via strikeouts Feb. 11, 2001. The last Eagle to post 10-plus strikeouts was Jaime Quiros, who had 10 on April 11 vs. Albany. Steve Langone registered a team season-best 13 strikeouts on March 10, 2000 vs. FAU. He also threw 12 strikeouts in his previous outing, March 4 vs. Buffalo. Lederhos' current teammate, Mark Sullivan, recorded 10 K's March 8, 2000 vs. Mount St. Mary's.

Coach Hughes Pete Hughes is in his third season as the Eagles' head coach. At Northeastern, he will coach his 126th career game as the BC skipper (72-52-1). His career record stands at 124-82-1. The 33-year-old coach earned his 100th career coaching victory with a two-game sweep of Vermont on April 12, 2000. The triple-crowned coach took home three awards last year, named 2000 BIG EAST, New England and ABCA Northeast Region Division 1 Coach of the Year.

2000, In a Nutshell The 2000 Eagles set a school record for wins in a season (35), bettering the previous record of 26 set in 1999 during Coach Hughes' inaugural campaign. Boston College finished 69th in the final 2000 RPIs, 97 places better than two years ago. The Eagles were 79th in 1999. The NCAA picked the BIG EAST Conference eighth in strength while Baseball America listed the conference fifth among the nation's strongest in the preseason. Last year marked BC's second-ever appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament where they finished third (fifth in the regular season).

BIG EAST Brilliance This weekend, BC begins BIG EAST action with a three-game series at Virginia Tech - picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll. In 2000 conference play, the Eagles swept three teams (Villanova, St. John's and Georgetown). BC's sweep of Villanova on April 1-2 was its first three-game victory over a conference team since it took three from Connecticut in 1995. The Eagles won an unprecedented doubleheader over St. John's April 20, its first series win against the Red Storm since April 22-23, 1989. At the end of April, BC swept Georgetown in a three-game series. In the second game of that series, Boston College recorded six home runs.
