March 22, 2001

This Weekend's Game Boston College travels to Morgantown, West Virginia for a doubleheader Friday, March 23 at 1 p.m. before heading to Georgetown (Shirley Povich Field, Bethesda, Md.) for a twinbill Sunday, March 25. Game time is noon.

Blanking in Blacksburg The Eagles snapped their win streak at eight, dropping three straight games (10-4, 4-3, 13-5) to the BIG EAST's newest member, Virginia Tech, this past weekend (March 18-19) in Blacksburg. That series marked the first time that BC has come away winless in a conference weekend since the Eagles suffered three-consecutive losses to visiting Rutgers March 25-26, 2000.

West Virginia Series Due to Beantown's inclement weather, BC did not play West Virginia last season. The two teams met in the final conference series of 1999, though. The Mountaineers' one win in three contests at Chestnut Hill prevented BC from participating in the BIG EAST playoffs that year.

West Virginia grabbed the 2-1 victory in game one (May 15, 1999) - scoring two runs in the seventh and final inning - then BC won the final games 5-4, 5-0. In the three games, Joe Kealty went 3-for-8 with two doubles, a sacrifice fly and three RBIs. In limited plate appearances, teammate Chris Rosado was 1-for-2. Mike Hubbard had two hits in 10 at bats with a sacrifice hit.

The Eagles lost two of three games to West Virginia in the 1998 series after winning two of three contests in 1997. BC has not swept a series from WVU since the Mountaineers joined the BIG EAST in 1996, in which year, BC was swept (0-3).

Georgetown Grins BC swept Georgetown 3-0 April 29-30, 2000 by scores of 11-2, 21-5 and 16-3. The Eagles had 12 home runs in the three-game series and 50 hits en route to 48 runs. In the second game alone, BC pounded six home runs and 21 hits (tying a season-high) for 21 runs. Brian Macchi went 2-for-2 with a grand slam, two-run home run and sacrifice fly for seven RBIs to propel the visitors to the 21-5 win. In the third and final game of the Hoya series, Chris Rosado was 2-for-2 with two round-trippers. Four returning players on the 2001 squad hit above .500 in last year's series, including Brian Macchi - .667, Chris Rosado - .667, Brian Durkin - .556, and Joe Kealty - .500.

The Eagles most recent loss to Georgetown was April 3, 1999, a 2-1 decision in Chestnut Hill. BC won the second game of the twinbill 10-3.

In the past 11 years, BC has won the Georgetown series five times, sweeping the series 3-0 three times (2000, 1991, 1990). The two teams have split the series three times. The Eagles have been on the plus side of the 2-1 series decision twice and fell 1-2 in 1992. In 1994, BC won then tied a contest with the Hoyas.

It's in the Books ... Three Eagles climbing up the BC record books include seniors Joe Kealty, Jarett Mendoza and Mike Hubbard. Kealty surpassed Joe Hayward `93 (151) with his 152nd career hit for ninth place. Mike Hubbard currently ranks 11th (150) in the same category, followed by Mendoza in 12th place (144). Kealty needs one more run batted in to tie Mike Quirk `00 in career RBIs (94). Another home run for Jarett Mendoza will tie him for sixth on the career home run leaders list, he currently has 13.

And the award goes to ... Brian Durkin was named BIG EAST offensive player of the week (March 11) after notching 10 hits in 24 at bats with six RBIs and five walks. On the eight-game Florida road trip, Durkin collected four home runs and one triple for a .893 slugging percentage. He fell one double short of a cycle in Sunday's 11-4 victory over LaSalle. He is now batting .340. The last Eagle bestowed with the weekly award was pitcher Steve LangoneMay 1, 2000.

Logging the K's Matt Lederhos threw 11 strikeouts - three more than his 2000 total - in BC's 8-2 win over Buffalo March 6. Lederhos was the first 2001 BC pitcher to throw 10-plus strikeouts in a game this season. Paul Knapic retired nine FAU batters via strikeouts Feb. 11, 2001. The last Eagle to post 10-plus strikeouts was Jaime Quiros, who had 10 on April 11 vs. Albany. Steve Langone registered a team season-best 13 strikeouts on March 10, 2000 vs. FAU. He also threw 12 strikeouts in his previous outing, March 4 vs. Buffalo. Lederhos' current teammate, Mark Sullivan, recorded 10 K's March 8, 2000 vs. Mount St. Mary's.

Coach Hughes Pete Hughes is in his third season as the Eagles' head coach. He enters Friday's game with a 70-49-1 record at the Heights. His career record stands at 122-79-1. The 33-year-old skipper earned his 100th career coaching victory with a two-game sweep of Vermont on April 12, 2000. The triple-crowned coach took home three awards last year, named 2000 BIG EAST, New England and ABCA Northeast Region Division 1Coach of the Year.

2000, In a Nutshell The 2000 Eagles set a school record for wins in a season (35), bettering the previous record of 26 set in 1999 during Coach Hughes' inaugural campaign. Boston College finished 69th in the final 2000 RPIs, 97 places better than two years ago. The Eagles were 79th in 1999. The NCAA picked the BIG EAST Conference eighth in strength while Baseball America listed the conference fifth among the nation's strongest in the preseason. Last year marked BC's second-ever appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament where they finished third (fifth in the regular season).

BIG EAST Brilliance This weekend, BC begins BIG EAST action with a three-game series at Virginia Tech - picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll. In 2000 conference play, the Eagles swept three teams (Villanova, St. John's and Georgetown). BC's sweep of Villanova on April 1-2 was its first three-game victory over a conference team since it took three from Connecticut in 1995. The Eagles won an unprecedented doubleheader over St. John's April 20, its first series win against the Red Storm since April 22-23, 1989. At the end of April, BC swept Georgetown in a three-game series. In the second game of that series, Boston College recorded six home runs.
