March 20, 2012
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team open the home season today with a 3 p.m. game against in-state rival, Holy Cross. The Eagles (6-11, 0-6 ACC) then play ACC opponent No. 14 Georgia Tech (14-6, 3-3 ACC) this weekend, March 23-25.
Sophomore Tom Bourdon leads the team in batting average (.377), slugging percentage (.701), on-base percentage (.407), as well as home runs (5), hits (29) and doubles (8). He and senior Anthony Melchionda are tied for the team lead with 12 RBIs and junior Matt McGovern leads the team with 10 walks. Junior right-hander Hunter Gordon has a team-low 3.68 ERA while sophomore Eric Stevens leads BC with 26.2 innings pitched and class Matt Alvarez has recorded 19 Ks.
Last year, the Eagles lost in Worcester, Mass., to the Crusaders (7-7), 3-2, in a close battle. Current senior Andrew Lawrence provided the only offense for BC when he hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Senior Matt Brazis got the loss on the hill. Lawrence's homer put the Eagles ahead early in the third. Brad Zapenas hit a one-out single to get himself on base before Lawrence. Holy Cross tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off back-to-back base hits with runners on base with two outs. The Crusaders took a one-run lead when they scored in the seventh on a hit-and-run single with the runner scoring from second.
Freshman left-hander Nick Poore will get the start on Tuesday. He is 1-0 with a 6.43 ERA in six appearances.
