Paré Named to 2013 Johnny Bench Award Initial Watch List
March 11, 2013
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Senior baseball catcher Matt Paré was named to the initial watch list for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com, announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Monday morning.
The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native was one of 48 catchers nominated for the award by their coaches. He has played 144 games for the Eagles, including 136 starts. He has started eight games behind the plate this season for the Maroon and Gold, tallying three runs, four hits and an RBI. Last year, after a knee injury cut short his sophomore season, he started 43 games behind the plate and led BC with a .411 on-base percentage and was second on the team with 24 walks.
Paré was voted a captain by his teammates for the 2013 season and awarded the honor of wearing the number eight jersey, in honor of former player Peter "Sonny" Nictakis. Recently, he was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
Because the award is given annually to the top division one collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 6, 2013. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 16, 2013. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4, 2013. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27, 2013.
