Baseball Opens ACC Play with No. 14 Miami

March 8, 2012

Coral Gables, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team finishes up its play in Florida with the ACC opener in Miami, facing the 14th-ranked Hurricanes for a three-game series.

The Eagles enter the series with a 6-5 record, coming taking two-of-three from Florida Gulf Coast, but falling to FIU and FAU. The Eagles are hoping to end a three-game skid. The Hurricanes enter 9-3, after dropping a weekend set to No. 1 Florida, but beating Miami (Ohio), 4-3, on Wednesday night.

Last season, the Hurricanes won both games of a doubleheader, 19-4 and 7-6, in Chestnut Hill. The second game was shortened to five innings due to the travel schedule. In game two, BC was losing 7-3 entering the bottom of the fifth and rallied back as current junior Matt McGovern plated one with a sac fly and senior Anthony Melchionda doubled to score another. Senior Kyle Prohovich tallied an RBI single for the sixth run. Melchionda went 2-for-3 in the second game with a double and three RBIs while current sophomore Tom Bourdon went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Since BC joined the ACC in 2006, the two teams have battled 13 times, with Miami leading the series, 9-4. Two of the Eagles' wins have come in the ACC Tournament.
