Feb. 23, 2012
Orlando, Fla. - After a 3-0 start, the Boston College baseball team will travel to Orlando, Fla., to play a three-game series with No. 19 UCF. The Knights (3-1) also started their season 3-0, sweeping a three-game series with LIU Brooklyn by a combined score of 31-9. They fell to No. 1 Florida, 8-0, Wednesday night. Since 1980, BC and UCF have faced each other three times and the Knights have won all three contests.
Last year in Orlando, UCF shutout BC, 18-0, on March 9, jumping ahead to an early 11-0 lead. Five different Eagles pitched in the game. UCF is the fourth team the Eagles have faced in 2012 that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Knights went 1-2 in the Tallahassee Regional, where Florida State advanced out. BC plays eight more teams that were tournament bound last year.
The Eagles swept the Caravelle Resort Tourament, hosted by Coastal Carolina, beating No. 17 Virginia, James Madison and No. 35 Coastal Carolina. They were the only team in the nation to defeat two ranked teams in the same weekend. As a team, BC hit .280 with a .477 slugging percentage and a .355 on-base percentage. The pitching staff allowed only four earned runs for a 1.33 ERA. They walked only nine and struck out 17. Senior Anthony Melchionda earned ACC Player of the Week honors for his 6-for-14 efforts on the weekend.
