Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College senior shortstop Anthony Melchionda was named Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Week for his play in the Caravelle Resort Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina, the league announced on Monday.
The Braintree, Mass., native led the Eagles (3-0) as they swept No. 17 Virginia, James Madison and No. 35 Coastal Carolina opening weekend. He tallied a .429 batting clip, which included three doubles and a home run, and he drove in six runs. He was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 5-3 season-opening win against the Cavaliers and followed with a 2-for-5 performance in the 8-5 win over James Madison. In Saturday's nightcap with the host Chanticleers, Melchionda put in another 2-for-5 game, with a home run and three RBIs.
Not only was he strong at the plate, but Melchionda did not commit an error in 21 chances at short.
Duke right-hander Robert Huber earned Pitcher of the Week honors in the first weekly honors of the 2012 season. The honor for the Maroon and Gold is the first since April 2010, when centerfielder Robbie Anston earned the accolades.
The Eagles are back in action on Feb. 24 for a three-game series with UCF in Orlando, Fla.
