Baseball Opens 2012 at the Caravelle Resort Tournament
Feb. 16, 2012
Conway, S.C. - The Boston College baseball team, led by second-year head coach Mike Gambino, will open the 2012 campaign at the Caravelle Resort Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Eagles will face the No.17 Virginia to open the season on Friday, Feb. 17 and then face James Madison on Saturday and host Chanticleers on Sunday.
BC finished the season 17-33 (7-22 ACC), placing fifth in the Atlantic Division. For the second year in a row, the top returning hitter in the lineup is senior Anthony Melchionda who led the team with a .304 batting average (played in 75 percent of games). He also had 17 doubles and 34 RBIs. Junior Matt McGovern tallied a .371 batting clip in 34 games, recording 46 hits and 18 RBIs. He also led the team with a .395 average in 21 conference games with 14 RBIs.
Since 1980, the only time BC has faced Coastal Carolina was when the Eagles played in the same tournament last year. The Chanticleers defeated the Eagles, 9-6, to open the 2011 season. Boston College has not played James Madison, dating back to 1980 records. BC has played Virginia 18 times since the Eagles joined the ACC for the 2006 season. The Cavaliers have won 16 of those meetings. Last year, BC earned one of the three-game series victories with a 5-4, 11-inning win at home.
Virginia advanced to the College World Series in 2011 and lost to the eventual champions, South Carolina, going 2-2 in Omaha. Coastal Carolina went 1-2 in the regionals of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
