CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Rob Chamra threw 5.0 no-hit innings to lead NC State past the Boston College baseball team, 6-1, in the season finale Saturday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Chamra worked 5.1 innings in his outing to earn the win, allowing one run and walking three. He gave up two hits. D.J. Thomas and Josh Easley closed the book with a perfect 3.2 innings of relief.
Matt Bergquist led the Wolfpack (33-23, 15-15 ACC) at the plate with a double and three RBIs. John Gianis drove in a pair while Danny Canela doubled, had an RBI and scored twice.
Boston College's (17-33, 7-22) two hits were singles and they came from junior Brad Zapenas and sophomore Rob Moir. Sophomore Matt McGovern drove in the lone Eagles run. Freshman Eric Stevens (1.1 IP), juniors Kyle Prohovich (1.2) and Matt Brazis (1.0) and redshirt freshman Matt Alvarez (1.0) all had scoreless outings in relief.
After a quick first three innings that saw one hit, NC State broke through with three runs in the top of the fourth. Pratt Maynard hit a leadoff single and Harold Riggins walked, then Tarran Senay laid down a bunt. BC got the lead runner at third for the first out of the inning, but then a wild pitch moved two runners into scoring position anyway. Andrew Ciencin wore a pitch to load the bases, then Canela beat out a double play ball at first to score a run. Bergquist capped the scoring when he hit the wall in left for a two-out, two-run double.
The Wolfpack scored three more times in the sixth to build a 6-0 lead. Cameron Conner hit a pinch hit infield single and then Ciencin pulled a double down the third base line. BC elected to intentionally walk Canela to load the bases and Bergquist used a sac fly to score a run. Canela reached second when the throw home got past the catcher, then Gianis hit a two-run single up the middle.
BC got on the board with a run in the bottom half of the frame. Zapenas led off with a single and then Moir followed with one of his own to put men on first and second. A fly out to right moved Zapenas over to third and Moir stole second to take away the force out. McGovern drove in the run with a groundout to short.
Eight Boston College seniors were honored prior to the final game of their careers. RHP Dane Clemens, INF Matt Hamlet, RHP Dave Laufer, C Jim Laufer, RHP John Leonard, RHP Geoff Oxley, C/INF/RHP Garret Smith and OF/1B Mike Sudol all participated in their last collegiate game.
