RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Robbie Anston accounted for six runs and sophomore Taylor Lasko allowed one run in 4.1 innings of relief to lead the Boston College baseball team to a 9-5 win against NC State Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Anston finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and three runs. Senior John Spatola went 3-for-5 with his 10th home run and two RBI. Junior Matt Hamlet was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and senior Mike Sudol went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs.
Lasko got the win in relief - his second of the season - allowing one run on five hits. He struck four and didn't issue a walk.
Saturday's game has been moved to 2 p.m. from its originally scheduled 6:30 p.m. start due to rain in the forecast tomorrow night.
NC State scored four runs in the bottom of the third on six-straight hits to start the inning. Russell Wilson and Chris Diaz opened the frame with consecutive singles and then Dallas Poulk laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Andrew Ciencin stepped to the plate and pulled a 3-2 pitch down the third base line for a bases-clearing double. Drew Poulk then added to the lead with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Spatola got a run back in the top of the fourth when he pulled a 1-1 offering that got out quickly over the wall in right.
The Eagles (21-17, 10-9 ACC) posted four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Sudol led off and hit a triple down the line that the sliding left fielder couldn't hold on to and then sophomore Brad Zapenas drove him in with a high chopper to short that he beat out for a single. Junior Garret Smith moved Zapenas 90 feet with a sac bunt and then Anston ripped a grounder to first that took a huge hop over the fielder's head for an RBI triple to cut the deficit to a run.
Hamlet walked to put runners on the corners with one out and then junior Mickey Wiswall hit a grounder up the middle. The second baseman fielded it near the bag and tagged second then made a tough throw back to first that bounced and got past the first baseman, allowing Anston to score and tie the game. Wiswall advanced to second on the play and Spatola put BC ahead with an RBI single.
BC scored three more times in the sixth to take a four-run lead. Sudol singled with one out and then the shortstop mishandled a grounder to put runners on first and second. A groundout put both of them into scoring position with two outs and Anston dropped a two-run double into left field. After Anston stole third, Hamlet drove him in with a chopper up the middle to extend the lead to 8-4.
The Eagles added another run in the eighth for good measure. Zapenas drew a leadoff walk and Smith sacrificed him to second. Anston dropped a double down the line in right, but Zapenas was thrown out at the plate as he had to wait halfway down the line to see if it would be caught. Hamlet made up for it though, sending an 0-2 pitch into center for an RBI single to make it 9-4.
NC State scored its only run off Lasko in the bottom half of the frame when Chris Schaeffer and John Gianis both hit doubles in the inning.
Drew Poulk went 3-for-5 for NC State (26-14, 9-10) with an RBI. Schaeffer, Wilson and Dallas Poulk all had two hits apiece.
