April 1, 2007
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Baseball looked to salvage game three of a three game set with the Wolfpack, but dropped a 6-2 decision this afternoon at Shea Field. The loss is the Eagles' third in a row and drops their overall record to 8-14-1 and 4-8 in conference play. NC State wins for the 10th time in its last 13 games and improves to 22-8 and 8-4 in ACC action.
Junior Terry Doyle took the mound for just his second start of the season for the Eagles and held the Wolfpack hitless through the first four innings. But, back to back doubles from Caleb Mangum and Mike Roskopf, followed by a sacrifice fly from Drew Martin, put NC State on the board first, 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Mike Belfiore and Pete Frates would single and Dan Houston would walk to load the bases in the bottom of the frame for the Eagles. Joe Ayers would single to right field scoring Belfiore and pulling BC to within one, 2-1. But, NC State would benefit from a double-play ball, ending the Eagles' threat.
With two runners on base in the top of the sixth, Mangum would single to right, scoring Ryan Pond. The very next batter, Mike Roskopf would single to right field and NC State would take advantage of a BC throwing error and extend their lead to 4-1. Dallas Poulk would add a sacrifice fly and the Wolfpack would lead 5-1 after the top of the sixth.
The Eagles would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Hutchinson would lsingle and then advance to second on a balk by the pitcher, and would score two batters later on a single up the middle by Eric Campbell, making it 5-2.
NC State would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Mike Roskopf would homer to right center giving him his third hit of the day.
The Eagles are quickly back in action as they travel to Storrs, Conn. tomorrow afternoon to take on the UConn Huskies at 3:00 p.m.
