Smithfield, R.I. - The Boston College baseball team dropped a 13-2 decision at Bryant on Wednesday afternoon at Conaty Park. The Eagles (3-19) made a season-high five errors and were outhit, 13-8, by the Bulldogs (10-9-1).
In his first start of the year, junior right-hander Matt Alvarez (0-1) took the loss, pitching three innings, allowing five hits, three runs - all earned - one walk and striking out four. Classmate Tom Bourdon was 3-for-5. Sophomore Blake Butera extended his hit streak to eight games, the longest of the year for the Eagles, with a scorcher up the middle in the eighth.
Bryant's right-handed starter Joseph Michaud (1-2) earned his first win, going seven innings, allowing six hits, one run, one walk and striking out six.
The Eagles left 10 runners on base.
The Bulldogs were the first to get on the board, scoring a run in the first. AJ Zarozny hit a bloop single to right and moved to third on two wild pitches. Kevin Brown plated him with a base hit. Alvarez tallied all three outs on Ks.
Bryant added two more in the third as Jordan Mountford led off with a single through the right side and stole second to move into scoring position. Zarozny drove him in with a double to left center. He moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a double play ball to make it a three-run lead.
The Eagles got one back in the fourth as Bourdon led off with a double down the right-field line. A groundout by freshman Logan Hoggarth moved him to third and senior Matt Paré drove him in with a groundout to second.
The Bulldogs tacked on seven in the bottom of the inning to make it a 10-1 game. With freshman lefty Jesse Adams on the mound, Dan Muscatello led off with a single and scored when Adam Claire reached on a fielding error by freshman shortstop Gabriel Hernandez and centerfielder Bourdon mishandled the ball. Claire crossed the plate on a base hit by Robby Rinn. Rinn moved up on a sacrifice bunt and Mountford singled to advance him. Zarozny singled to score the third run. Adams gave up a walk to load the bases and classmate RHP John Nicklas came in to face John Mullen, who hit a bases-clearing double. He scored on an error by second baseman Butera before the Eagles turned a 163 double play to get out of the inning.
Brown led off the sixth with a solo shot over the right-field fence and drove in two more with a triple in the seventh. Senior right-hander Jay Jeannotte saw his first time on the hill and struck out his first batter to start the inning. Two walks put runners on and Brown knocked one to right center to score two before Jeannotte forced a groundout to end the inning.
Junior lefty Steve Green pitched a 123 eighth, striking out two and the Eagles managed to get one more run in the top of the ninth. Freshman pinch hitter Stephen Sauter drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Sophomore Travis Ferrick singled to put runners on the corners and junior John Hennessy plated Sauter with a groundout to second.
