Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team lost a 3-1 battle with in-state rival Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at the first game of the 2012 season at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Shea Field. While the Eagles' (6-12) pitching staff allowed only two earned runs on four hits, the Crusaders' (8-7) righties shut down the BC bats.
The Eagles' lone run was scored in the fourth to tie the game at one on an RBI by senior Anthony Melchionda. He leads the team with 13.
The BC pitching staff gave up only two walks on the entire day. Freshman RHP John Gorman (0-1) recorded the loss, pitching three innings of relief. The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the second. Patrick Puentes was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Jordan Enos singled to put two on. Andrew Barry grounded into a double play, but plated Puentes for the first run of the game.
The Eagles tied the game in the fourth as sophomore Tom Bourdon led off with a single to right. The centerfielder has reached safely in 11 straight games, tying Melchionda for the team high this season. Freshman Blake Butera singled to center and Bourdon hustled to third. Melchionda drove him in with a sac fly to left. Senior Andrew Lawrence continued the hitting with another single, but Butera was thrown out at third when he over-slid the bag. Senior Spenser Payne reached on a fielding error by third baseman Mike Ahmed, but he made up for it by putting away a grounder on the next play.
The Crusaders retook the lead in the sixth, scoring two runs. Puentes reached first on an error to start the inning and Steven Tkowski drew a one-out walk to put two on. Enos singled to score Puentes and move Tkowski to third. Cipolla plated the second run on a sac fly to give Holy Cross a 3-1 lead.
BC threatened in the eighth as junior pinch hitter Matt McGovern drew a walk and sophomore John Hennessy singled, but with one out, McGovern got caught in a run down for the second out and a groundout ended the BC's scoring chances.
