Bullpen Leads Baseball To 7-4 Win At Maryland
March 18, 2011
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seven different relievers combined to throw 8.0 shutout innings as the Boston College baseball team beat Maryland, 7-4, Friday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
The bullpen faced two batters over the minimum through the last 8.0 innings of the game and only allowed one hit - a solo homer in the eighth. Maryland only had three other base runners during that span and they all came on walks.
Senior Mike Sudol led the Eagles (7-8, 1-3 ACC) at the plate by going 3-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and three runs scored. Junior Anthony Melchionda went 3-for-5 with a double while senior Garret Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Maryland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Charlie White and Ryan Holland started the inning with consecutive singles and then a soft grounder to second moved them both into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases and then Alfredo Rodriguez brought in the first run with a fielder's choice. Rodriguez stole second to put two more in position and Korey Wacker found the hole on the left side of the infield for two more runs.
BC got two of those runs back in the top of the second. Junior Marc Perdios drew a leadoff walk and then Sudol hit an 0-2 double off the wall in center to put runners on second and third. Smith hit an RBI single and another run came home on a double play.
The Eagles scored two more times in the fourth to take their first lead of the game. Sudol turned on a 2-1 pitch and launched it over the fence in right to tie the game. Smith hit the gap in right for a double and senior Matt Hamlet brought him in with an RBI single up the middle.
Another run in the fifth pushed the lead to two runs. Junior Andrew Lawrence led off with a walk and Melchionda singled to put men on first and second. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out and a passed ball scored Lawrence to make it 5-3.
BC added another insurance run in the eighth. Sudol hit a one-out single and Smith was hit in the shoulder with a pitch to put men on first and second. Freshman Tom Bourdon chopped a pitch to second with two outs and the second baseman missed the tag on Smith. Sudol was able to come all the way around to score to extend the lead to 6-3.
Holland made it a two-run game with a solo homer in the bottom half of the eighth.
BC got that run back with another run in the ninth. Lawrence pulled a leadoff double down the line in right and Perdios drove him in with a single.
Holland went 2-for-4 for the Terrapins (9-9, 0-4) with two runs and Wacker had a pair of RBIs.
BC and Maryland will play game two of the series Saturday at 3 p.m.
