DURHAM, N.C. - Baseball began its ACC schedule on a high note this afternoon as they defeated the Duke University Blue Devils 3-1 in Durham. Freshman Tony Sanchez broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth with an RBI-single and BC added another run on a bases-loaded walk to hold on for the victory. With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Blue Devils drop just their second game of the season.

BC would grab an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a solo home run by Joseph Ayers. Duke would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Jimmy Gallagher drew a walk to start the inning then would advance all the way to third when Sanchez's pick off throw from the plate sailed into right field. Catcher Matt Williams then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Gallagher.

With the score knotted at 1-1 entering the top of the eighth, first baseman Jett Ruiz doubled to left to begin the inning. Senior Jeff Schomaker came in to pinch run for Ruiz and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Peter Frates. Sanchez then lined an RBI-single past the shortstop to score Schomaker.

Eagles starter Kevin Boggan improved to 2-0 on the season, holding the Blue Devils to one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Junior Terry Doyle then pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for his first save of the year.

The Eagles and Blue Devils will take the field again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Durham, N.C.
