March 8, 2006
Orlando, Fla. - Ryan Hutchinson went 3 for 4 and bunted home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Boston College baseball team bounced back from two consecutive losses to defeat Sacred Heart 8-7 in Orlando, Fla.
BC went to work early in the bottom of the first inning when Dave Preziosi, following a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a single by Johnny Ayers. Preziosi then scored on a groundout by Jared McGuire to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Ayers would steal third eventually score on a single by Eric Campbell who collected his team-leading tenth RBI of the season. Ryne Reynoso and Hutchinson added RBI singles to give BC a 4-0 lead.
Sacred Heart battled back, scoring one in the third and two in the fifth inning off starter Nick Napolitano to cut the lead to one run. The Eagles answered in its half of the fifth when Reynoso jacked a one-out solo blast. After Preziosi squeezed home Hutchinson, and advanced to second on Ayers' fourth hit, McGuire brought him around with a single to give BC a 7-3 lead.
The Pioneers would not go away, as Jason Maiella ripped a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to make the score 7-6. The score remained that way until the top of the ninth when Sacred Heart tied it on a double by Jeff Hanson. The Pioneers threatened to score more but, with the bases loaded, third baseman Joseph Ayers scooped up a ground ball, forced out the runner at third base and fired home to Jett Ruiz who applied the tag to keep the score tied.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ruiz walked to start the inning and Jeff Schomaker came on to pinch-run. Shawn McGill dumped a double into left field, advancing Schomaker to third. After Reynoso was intentionally walked, Hutchinson laid down the perfect bunt to give the Eagles the win and move its record to 9-3.
