Baseball Defeats Florida Atlantic For First Win of Season

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Nearly 24 hours after facing the Boston Red Sox, the Eagles headed to Boca Raton to take on the Owls of Florida Atlantic University, and held on for a 6-5 decision last night, giving BC their first win of the young season. With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-3 overall while FAU drops to 11-3.
Senior Kevin Boggan picked up his first win of the year, picthing a solid game, allowing only two runs on five hits, and striking out eight. Boggan would hold the Owls hitless through the first three innings but, they would get to him for three consecutive hits to start the bottom of the fourth.
The Eagles would get on the board in the top of the third as they would collect two runs on two doubles from Tony Sanchez and Ryan Hutchinson and take an early 2-0 lead. BC would build their lead to 4-0 the very next inning, as they would tack on two more runs on four hits. Eric Campbell would start the inning off flying out to right, but junior catcher Jett Ruiz homered to left field the next at-bat, and freshman Tony Sanchez would single to left two batters later, scoring Peter Frates from second.
By the fifth inning, the Eagles held a 6-2 run after scoring two more runs in the fifth off FAU starter Brandon Cooney. Cooney finished the night after 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and striking out two.
Five BC pitchers saw action in the game, and the Owl offense would post three runs off of Eagles pitching in the eighth, cutting the lead to 6-5. But, BC was able to hang on, as sophomore Dan Houston came in to close out the Owls in the bottom of the ninth, surrendering only one hit.
The Eagles and Owls meet again today at FAU stadium at 1:00 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
