Throughout Flynn Fund Appreciation Week, the Flynn Fund office will be spotlighting a different BC Athletics donor. Today's donor spotlight recognizes Ryan '06 and Anne '05 Foster of New York, N.Y. Ryan, a former BC hockey player, currently works for Soros Fund Management, while Anne recently opened a boutique interior design firm. Anne's business, Tilton Fenwick, Inc., was named in part after Anne's freshman dorm on the Heights. This past April, Ryan and Anne welcomed Gibbons Rose Foster into their family, whom they hope will be a member of the class of 2035!
The Fosters are both G.O.L.D. alumni (Graduates Of the Last Decade) who have already identified Boston College among their philanthropic priorities. Additionally, Ryan and Anne are able to maximize the impact of their philanthropy to BC by utilizing the matching gift program offered by Ryan's employer. Boston College thanks these young alumni for their generosity and commitment to their alma mater. Below please find their thoughts on giving back to BC.
Why do you feel it is important to support BC Athletics?
We have a special connection to BC Athletics, as it was the BC Hockey team that brought Ryan to the school. Anne, on the other hand, had not much of an interest in athletics prior to freshman year. We laugh because on the day she toured the campus, the BC Hockey team won the NCAA National Championship in hockey hosted in her hometown of Albany, N.Y. After sharing with people on campus that day that she was from the Albany area, the reaction was consistently, "Why are you here?!" It was her first hint to the incredible camaraderie and school spirit that would greet her freshman year.
To what designation did you choose to give and why?
We've designated our contributions to need-based students. Today's students are the future of BC. Attracting and retaining the most qualified students and student-athletes, regardless of their financial ability, will continue to build Boston College as a national leader in both academics and athletics.
How would you like to see your gift impact today's generation of BC students?
We understand the importance charitable giving has for every university and we hope our contribution can continue to support BC students as they develop into well-rounded individuals.
With so many great charitable organizations you could choose to support, why do you include BC among your philanthropic priorities?
The education that we received at Boston College has gotten us both to where we are in our careers today. Both the high-standing academics and the development into well-rounded individuals has served us both tremendously well entering a competitive and fast-paced professional environment in New York City.
Please share one of your most memorable experiences as a Boston College student.
Perhaps the day we met almost 10 years ago in Lower Dining Hall. That was a very special day for us personally as five years later we were married! Just this past year we welcomed our first child, who will be starting young as an Eagle fan and attend her first tailgate and football game this fall!
Describe your experiences cheering-on the Eagles on game day.
Some of our fondest memories are from tailgating in our SuperFan shirts on game day. Nothing better than great friends and the BC spirit alive on Shea Field!
How have you seen BC change since you were a student?
We continue to see BC rise in national rankings among top universities. We have a sense of pride as BC continues to excel as a top school for both academics and athletics.
What would you say to a friend who was considering joining the Flynn Fund?
The continued growth and success of the university is significantly impacted by alumni donations. We feel strongly about giving back to a university like BC that offered us so much in the four years we were there and prepared us for the years beyond.
What are you most looking forward to in 2013-14 season?
Getting back to Boston this fall to support the football team and a fresh start. Also looking forward to continued dominance on the rink!
