Our mission: To invite the friends of Boston College and BC Athletics to develop a relationship with our University. In the fulfillment of our mission, we strive to clearly demonstrate the vision of our University, and the opportunities to invest in the betterment of our Student-Athletes.
The Flynn Fund is the principal fundraising arm of BC Athletics. It provides a way for individuals to help talented student-athletes receive a quality education from Boston College while ensuring that BC's tradition of excellence continues to grow.
With 31 varsity sports (most in the ACC) and an individual scholarship costing approximately $57,852, there continues to be a need for financial support from the University to fund our programs. This year BC offered 272 athletic scholarships totaling over $15 million, which is among the largest annual expenses incurred by the athletics department. All this is made possible with the support of our alumni, parents, and friends.
Over the past 10 years our annual athletic donations have increased significantly. In 2002, athletic donations totaled approximately $6.9M. Just 10 years later, in 2012, athletic donations totaled $20M, a 200% increase over that time period.
Commitments - often a indicator of future cash payments - were also strong with a varsity athletics record if more than $25 million pledged. This includes the largest commitment ever made in support of a varsity athletics team from an alumnus with the announcement of a $5 million gift to endow the head men's ice hockey coaching position. Additionally, the baseball program received the largest ever one-time commitment from an alumnus with a $2.5 million gift. The aforementioned gifts were among five commitments at the $1 million+ level. They also contributed to the 43 commitments of $100,000 or more. In the last two years, BC Athletics has received 87 commitments of $100,000 or more - a 45 percent increase over the prior two-year total.
Throughout the past few seasons, all of Conte Forum's locker rooms and Olympic sports facilities and offices have been updated and renovated including a new men's basketball suite in 2006. The women's basketball program moved into a new suite in 2005. There was construction of a field hockey and women's lacrosse turf field on the Newton Campus, and in 2004, FieldTurf was installed in Alumni Stadium. The Flynn Fund also contributed to the renovations and upgrades to several facilities, including: the remodeling of the men's hockey locker room and sports medicine suite, the addition of a press box and Field Turf at the soccer complex on the Newton Campus, as well as the construction of a new boathouse in conjunction with Community Rowing, Inc. to benefit both the men's crew and women's rowing programs.
The money generated by the Flynn Fund will help ensure the future of Boston College Athletics. By making a contribution to the Flynn Fund, you can help us recruit, coach and educate the nation's finest student-athletes. Your support is greatly appreciated and you can make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes.
