BC Competes in ICSA Championship
Nov. 25, 2013
This past weekend, in St. Petersburg, Fla., ten teams competed in the ICSA Match Race National Championship. The Championship was a three-day event, beginning on Friday, November 22, and concluding on Sunday, November 24.
The ten competing schools earned a chance to go for the Cornelius Shields, Sr. Trophy after advancing from their conference qualifiers. Racing in 23' Sonar Sloops, each crew was comprised of four members, including at least one female.
Unlike an average regatta, a match race is a one-on-one competition. Friday consisted of a round robin, with every team competing against each other once. At the end of the day, Yale was on top, having suffered one loss, and Boston College and St. Mary's College of Maryland were in second and third, respectively, both with two losses.
Teams were divided into two groups for the second stage on Saturday. The top six teams competed in a round robin in the "Gold Round", while the other four teams competed in a separate round robin in the "Repechage Round". Results from the Gold Round would determine each team's seeding in the final round, along with the top two teams from the Repechage Round.
Sunday began with the quarterfinals, in which the top seed raced against the bottom seed. The first team to score two points would advance to the semifinals. Yale, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Georgetown all won in their first two races. Boston College and the College of Charleston were forced into a third race, but it was Charleston who advanced to the Semifinals.
Georgetown defeated Charleston in the Finals to win the Championship, and St. Mary's defeated Yale to take third place. BC finished seventh in the event.
BC Sailing will conclude their season January 4, when they travel to Southern California for the Rose Bowl Regatta.
