Tom McElroy Golf Classic Background
August 30, 2010 will mark the 15th Tom McElroy Golf Classic, and the 28th consecutive event to honor Tom's memory. From 1984 through 1996, dinner dances were held to support the Scholarship. These dinner dances attracted almost 1700 attendees. In 1996 there were two events: the Tom McElroy Scholarship Dinner Dance at the Boston Newton Marriott in January, and the inaugural Tom McElroy Golf Classic at the Indian Ridge Country Club, in Andover, in September. Golf Classic participants have come from every New England state, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia.
Some 3,500 people have contributed to the success of the Tom McElroy Scholarship, either as a dinner attendee, golfer, patron, or sponsor. Some people have contributed every year since 1984, and most have contributed more than once. This outpouring of support and affection is a direct tribute to Tom, and the impact he had on those who knew him or knew about him.
Tom died on July 17, 1981 at age 22, after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. Tom loved Boston College and he loved soccer. So, when Tom died, the McElroy family thought the best way to perpetuate his memory was through a scholarship in his name, to be awarded each year to "....the Boston College soccer student-athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of courage, dedication, sincerity, and determination of Tom McElroy. "
The Scholarship was expanded in 1994 to include a member of the BC women's team. In 2004, the women's team became fully-funded, thereby eliminating the need for a scholarship. However, the Tom McElroy Golf Classic continues to support the women's team in Tom's name, bringing together the entire Boston College soccer community, something we know Tom would have liked.
