Eagles Swept by No. 8 Virginia Tech
April 24, 2022 | Baseball
Three-run seventh the difference in battle of the bullpens.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team was swept by No. 8 Virginia Tech with a 6-4 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Harrington Athletics Village. For the third day in a row, the Hokies (28-9, 12-7 ACC) put a crooked number on the board to break a tie in the sixth inning or later as catcher Cade Hunter ripped a two-out, bases-clearing double in the seventh.
The Eagles (15-25, 3-18 ACC) twice battled back from a deficit to tie, but registered just one hit, a home run by junior catcher Parker Landwehr (Baltimore, Md.) in the eighth, after cutting the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth; tying the score that inning on a fielder's choice.
Hunter had two of Virginia Tech's four doubles. Shortstop Tanner Schobel drove in two runs on a fifth-inning double.
BC pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters. Freshman right-hander Eric Schroeder (Ridgewood, N.J.) went three innings in the start. He gave up one unearned run on three walks and four strikeouts without a hit. Sophomore RHP Joey Ryan (Norwood, Mass.) struck out three in a row after a leadoff-double in the sixth as the fourth Eagle pitcher of the day. He left after 1.2 innings pitched, two runners aboard and two gone in the seventh. Both runners would score as Ryan (2-2) took the loss.
