
Balido, Mullen Lead Eagles in Beantown Challenge Day One

Volleyball fell to Princeton early in the day but nabbed a win over Bryant in five sets.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team spilt their matches for the first day of the Beantown Challenge, falling to Princeton but coming out victorious over Bryant in the night cap.
Boston College (2-3) and Princeton went back-and-forth each set, BC winning the first and third while Princeton took the second, fourth and fifth. The Eagles ended the third set with a 12-point win, 25-13, and came out in the fourth on a 7-0 run, but the Tigers found a groove and ultimately took the set as well as the match.
Cat Balido showed up for BC with 16 kills, 12 digs and 18.5 points. Lynn Braakhuis and McKenna Goss tallied 13 kills apiece, and Goss recorded a .520 hitting percentage. Jill Strockis led the Eagles with 17 digs.
Princeton was paced by Maggie O'Connell, who recorded 22 kills and match-high 24 points. The Tigers had two players with hitting percentages at or over .600: Jessie Harris (.600) and Caroline Sklaver (682).
Princeton (1-1) later volleyed against North Texas and fell in five sets.
The Eagles opened their next match victoriously, dominating the Bulldogs 25-13. Bryant took the following two sets, only to have BC force a fifth set after rallying in the fourth. The Eagles ultimately took the match after a commanding fifth set.
Balido led the Eagles with 18.5 points and 17 kills, while freshman Ally Mullen hit .476 from 11 kills and registered 14.5 points.
Bryant (2-4) followed Julia Flynn's 16.5 points and 16 kills. Brianna Bruny registered a match-high .500 average.
The Eagles will be back in Power Gym tomorrow at 12 p.m. to close out the Beantown Challenge against North Texas.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Tigers grabbed the first point, but the teams traded points to begin. Following an attack error from Princeton, BC pulled ahead and keep the momentum to take the first set of the day, 25-22.
SET 2
After being down 8-4, the Eagles went on an 8-0 to lead the set. Princeton caught up and the teams were neck-and-neck. The Tigers took the lead to match point and, though the Eagles brought it back to 24-23, Princeton ultimately took the set.
SET 3
BC opened on a 3-1 run and held a tight lead for the beginning of the match. The Eagles began to dominate Princeton after a Balido kill and concluded the set with a 12-point advantage, 25-13.
SET 4
The Eagles came into the fourth set energized, recording a 7-1 run. They held the lead for the rest of the set until Princeton tied the set at 23-all. The Tigers took the last two points and the set.
SET 5
Princeton tallied a 4-0 run to open this set, but BC rallied and took the lead at 8-7. Ultimately, the Tigers locked up the last two points, 16-14, and the match, 3-2.

The set sat in a stalemate for a majority of the time as neither team could pull ahead of the other. At 20-20, BC pulled ahead curtesy of a big block from Balido and West and the Eagles snatched the set, 25-23, forcing a fifth.
