Eagles Split Matches to Close Invitational

Volleyball fell to Providence College but capped the night with the season’s first win over UAB.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team dropped their first match August 26 against Providence College, but rallied to victory over Alabama Birmingham in their nightcap.
Boston College (1-2) dominated the first set of the first match, holding Providence (3-0) to 25-15, thanks in part to Sol Calvete and Lynn Braakhuis hitting .571 and .500, respectively. Braakhuis also contributed defensively, recording a set-high six digs.
The Friars secured the following three sets, and the match, 3-1, with three players tallying 10 or more kills and three with 12 digs. Providence went on to defeat Fairfield and take the tournament.
Cat Balido led the Eagles with 14 kills, while Braakhuis added another 11. Jane DeJarld registered a team-high 23 assists and 11 digs.
The second match was similar to the first as the Eagles tallied a quick first-set win, 25-18. They then dropped the second set to UAB (0-3) only to dominate in the following two, achieving their first 2017 victory.
Calvete led the charge with 17.5 points, 13 kills, a .357 hitting average, four aces and 11 digs. Amaka Chukwujekwu hit .417, while Balido contributed 13.5 points and 12 kills.
The Eagles will be back in Power Gym for a three-game weekend beginning September 1 at 11 a.m. against Princeton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
The Eagles snagged the opening point off a hitting error from the Friars. BC later took the lead following a 4-0 run. The lead was held until the end, awarding the Eagles the first set, 25-19.
SET 2
After beginning at a four-point deficit, BC closed the gap and spent the match neck in neck with Providence. Though there were four lead changes and eight tie scores, the Friars ultimately took the set, 25-19.
SET 3
A kill from Calvete gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead, though it was short-lived as the lead changed on five separate occasions. Providence took the set, 25-21.
SET 4
The Friars dominated the beginning of the set, however the Eagles were able to find the sweet spot with an 8-1 run that included two aces from Jill Strockis. BC was unable to hold the lead and fell 25-21.

A kill from McKenna Goss opened a 6-0 run, giving the Eagles an advantage from the beginning. BC maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, downing UAB 25-18.
SET 2
The Eagles took the lead after Calvete served three straight aces, but could not keep their advantage after a five-point run from the Blazers. BC was able to recover and surged to a tie at 19 apiece. A few late errors from UAB cemented BC's first two-set lead of the season, 25-22.
SET 3
Both teams traded points for almost the entirety of the set, but UAB pulled ahead in the end, 25-22.
SET 4
BC overcame a five-point deficit, though they remained a few points behind until they tied the match at 13. The Eagles finally snagged the lead after a lift from the Blazers and rode it out to win the set, 25-21, and the match.
