Haverhals Earns Preseason ACC Honors

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior Frederique Haverhals was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference's Team, the league announced on Tuesday. The Eagles' captain earned first-team All-America accolades a season ago.

Haverhals, a Warmond, The Netherlands, native has started all 42 games in her BC career. She was an All-ACC Second-Team selection in 2016 and collected NFHCA All-Northeast Region Second-Team honors in 2015. Last year, Haverhals led the Eagles with seven assists and finished the year fourth on the team with 17 points, scoring five goals. She had a five-game point streak at the end of last season as BC made its fourth straight NCAA Tournament.

Enrolled in the Carroll School of Management, Haverhals earned a spot on the NFHCA National Academic Squad and the All-ACC Academic Team.

The Eagles were picked to finish seventh in the league's preseason poll, voted by the conference's head coaches. North Carolina was chosen as the favorite to win the 2017 title.

Seven of the 11 on the preseason squad were named NFHCA All-Americans in 2016, including five who earned first team honors: Haverhals, Duke's Alyssa Chillano, Louisville's Ayeisha McFerran, Syracues's Roos Weers, and Virginia's Tara Vittese.

ACC teams have won 18 of the 36 NCAA field hockey titles, including 11 of the last 15, and at least one ACC squad has advanced to the national championship game for 18 straight years. Six ACC programs earned bids to the 2016 NCAA Championship and all seven finished the 2016 season ranked nationally.

The Eagles open the 2017 season on Friday, Aug. 25 with a 5 p.m. bout against Quinnipiac at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex.
