Eagles play No. 18 UMass Lowell to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team played No. 18 UMass Lowell to a 0-0 draw at the Newton Campus Complex on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up the team's preseason exhibition schedule. BC will officially open the 2017 slate next Friday, Aug. 25, when the Eagles host Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. in Newton.
"I thought the first half was good; they have a good team," BC head coach Ed Kelly said. "We missed some of our players who are coming back from injuries, but we had a couple of chances and I thought we were pretty good in the back. (Goalkeeper) Cedric (Saladin) didn't have much to do. Making all of the subs we did doesn't help continuity, but we needed to because of the heat, to save bodies and to keep everyone healthy."
Both teams had prime chances in the chippy first half.
UML saw Saladin stop a pair of free kicks to bookend the half: Alejandro Osorio's shot from just outside the area just 10 minutes in, then later Joe Kellett's effort from the edge of the area in the 44th minute.
Boston College's two top chances in the first came through Simon Enstrom. In the 23rd minute, Austin Kroll saved his shot after Beto Luno cut through a pair of defenders to set him up by the post. Later in the 44th minute, Enstrom got on the end of Luna's free kick, but his header back across the box was cleared high with a pair of Eagles crashing in.
The Eagles took greater control in the second half, claiming the stanza's first four chances – including a pair from Enstrom, and efforts by Henry Balf and Lasse Lehmann – before Lowell's Duran Lee sent Kellett's free kick high over the crossbar. Enstrom then hit the crossbar with a shot from 12 yards out and Riverhawks 'keeper Zach Rowell saved Lehmann and Adam French in a quick series.
Overall, BC out-shot UML 3-2 in a game that was played mostly between the 18-yard boxes.
"All-in-all, it was a good exercise for us. With Red Bulls II and Lowell, they're tough opponents to get us ready for the season," Kelly said. "We're looking forward to Friday now."
