Eagles get the competitive season going against the USL side
WHIPPANY, N.J. – The Boston College men's soccer team got its 2017 season unofficially underway on Tuesday morning, traveling to face the United Soccer Leagues (USL) entry New York Red Bulls II in a preseason scrimmage at the Red Bulls' training facility.
The defending 2016 USL Cup champion topped BC 4-0. New York is currently in eighth place in the USL's Eastern Conference with an 8-11-4 record with about one-third of the regular season remaining.
The Red Bulls took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but posted three goals in the second half to extend the lead to the final four-goal tally.
"Today was a great test for us to face young pros after just five days of preseason training," BC head coach Ed Kelly said. "The first half was pretty even and we thought their first goal was a penalty call that could've gone either way. After they got the second goal off a free kick, our team saw how quickly the pros can play and jump on an opponent.
"Overall, it was a great trip that we can take a lot from, both on and off the field, as we look ahead to Saturday against Lowell," Kelly said.
New York's Stefano Bonomo recorded a hat trick – including the free-kick strike – while Dilly Duka added the penalty-kick goal.
The Eagles return to the field on Saturday, Aug. 19, when they host UMass Lowell in the team's final preseason tune-up. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. BC will formally open the 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 25, when Quinnipiac visits Newton for a 4 p.m. tilt.
