Austin Cangelosi was tabbed Hockey East's best defensive forward while Eagle netminder Joseph Woll earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team as announced by the league office Wednesday
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Two Boston College hockey players, including senior assistant captain Austin Cangelosi and freshman goaltender Joseph Woll, were honored in Hockey East's annual postseason awards on Wednesday morning.
Â
The Hockey East Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year along with the Hockey East First Team, Second Team, Third Team and Honorable Mention All-Stars will be unveiled on Thursday evening at the league's postseason banquet held at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge.
Â
Cangelosi was heralded as Hockey East's Best Defensive Forward. The Estero, Fla. native is currently tied for 18th, nationally, with a +19 plus / minus rating. Only one other forward in all of Hockey East (Andrew Oglevie – Notre Dame) was amassed a figure that high.
Â
Boston College's centerman is averaging 0.92 points per game, which is tied for 76th in the country and tied for 19th in the conference. His 0.54 goals per game (20 in all) is tied for sixth amongst league foes while six of those tallies have come via the power play (tied for 12th in Hockey East).
Â
Cangelosi's most notable stat as a defensive forward is his three short-handed goals this season. Only 12 other skaters in college hockey have managed to score three or more times on the penalty kill.
Â
The 5-foot-8 center is also college hockey's most proficient faceoff man. Of primary faceoff men in college hockey, Cangelosi has totaled the best winning percentage (65.2 percent), coming away with 543-of-730 draws. His 543 won faceoffs are fourth best in college hockey, as well.
Â
Cangelosi is Boston College's first student-athlete to tally 20 goals in back-to-back seasons since Johnny Gaudreau did so in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Over the course of his career, Cangelosi has accounted for 56 goals and 61 assists.
Â
After scoring three goals against Vermont in the Hockey East quarterfinals series on March 10-11, Cangelosi is now tied for 46th, all-time with Brian Gibbons (2007-11) in career goals (56). He is also currently tied for 61st, all-time, in points scored at Boston College (56 - 61Â - 116).
Â
Woll was placed on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team following a 16-12-3 (.565) freshman campaign.
Â
The St. Louis native turned in a .913 save percentage, sixth overall in Hockey East, alongside a 2.61 goals against average (sixth in league play).
Â
Woll secured his first-career shutout in his 31st start as an Eagle on March 10 against Vermont. It marked the Eagles' first shutout of an opponent since blanking the Catamounts almost exactly one year ago.
Â
The Eagle backstopper joins Jake Oettinger (Boston University – goalie), Andrew Peeke (Notre Dame – defense), Ross Colton (Vermont – forward), Patrick Grasso (New Hampshire – forward), Patrick Harper (Boston University – forward) and Clayton Keller (Boston University – forward) to round out the 2-17 Hockey East All-Rookie squad.
