Newkirk, Burt Earn Monthly Honors from Hockey East

Newkirk was named co-player of the month, while Burt was the league’s goaltender of the month
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A pair of Boston College women's hockey players earned Hockey East monthly honors for their play in January as the Eagles posted an undefeated 8-0-1 record last month.

The conference announced today that sophomore forward Makenna Newkirk was the Hockey East Warrior Co-Player of the Month, while junior goaltender Katie Burt was the Goaltender of the Month. These are the first monthly honors of the season for both players. Newkirk shared the player of the month award with Northeastern's Denisa Krizova.

Newkirk posted 12 points on six goals and six assists in January. She recorded at least one point in eight of BC's nine games, and has brought a seven-game point streak (11 pts.) and a four-game goal streak (6 goals) into February.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., product collected three multiple-point games last month, culminating with a three-point effort in the Eagles' 3-2 win over Boston University in the first round of the 39th Annual Beanpot on Jan. 31. A week earlier, Newkirk scored three of Boston College's six goals in the road sweep at Vermont, including the game-winning goal in overtime on Jan. 20, and the game-winning goal on Jan. 21.

Newkirk is the Eagles' scoring leader with 33 points. In Hockey East action, Newkirk ranks third in scoring with 25 points.

Burt led all Hockey East players in every goaltending category in January as she started every game for the Eagles. She posted a 1.21 goals against average and a .944 save percentage while she recorded a pair of shutouts.

Nationally in January, the Lynn, Mass., product's nine starts, 943:59 played and eight wins led all goaltenders, while she tied for second in shutouts, fifth in GAA and sixth in save percentage.

Additionally in January, Burt set the Hockey East career shutout record with her 19th career shutout, a 1-0 win against Merrimack on Jan. 13. She added a 3-0 shutout at Vermont on Jan. 21 to push her career Hockey East shutout total to 20. Overall, Burt has 28 career shutouts and ranks eighth in NCAA history.

The win at UVM on Jan. 21 also marked Burt's 81st career victory, the Boston College program record. She passed two-time Olympian Molly Schaus '11, who set the original mark at 80 in her four-year career. Burt finished the month with 83 career wins and enters February tied for 10th on the NCAA career wins list.

Newkirk and Burt's awards are the Eagles' fifth and sixth monthly honors of the 2016-17 season. BC players earned the league's Rookie of the Month honor in October (Caitrin Lonergan), November (Lonergan) and December (Delaney Belinskas), and senior captain Andie Anastos was the league's player of the month in December.

Sixth-ranked Boston College (20-3-4, 15-2-2 HEA) returns to action later tonight when the Eagles host Connecticut at Kelley Rink. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
