Charlie Callinan presented the Scanlan Award as nine seniors honored
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior captain Charlie Callinan was awarded the Scanlan Award at the annual senior awards banquet Sunday afternoon. Callinan received Boston College's highest football honor given to the senior who best embodies the ideals of Tom Scanlan, class of 1920.
Â
A courageous and inspiring fullback who played both offense and defense for the Eagle teams of 1916, 1917, and 1919, forgoing the 1918 season for military service in World War I, Thomas F. Scanlan was a popular student-athlete and beloved alumnus, who was elected Varsity Club President for five consecutive years (1942-1946). He was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972.
Â
Despite missing four games with a foot injury, Callinan was a mainstay at wide receiver for the Eagles in 2017 and throughout his career. The New Jersey native has played 46 career games, including 33 starts for Boston College. His best game as an Eagle was earlier this season at home against Notre Dame, finishing with career highs in receptions (7), receiving yards (82) and touchdown receptions (2) against the Fighting Irish.
Â
Senior linebacker Ty Schwab earned the William J. Flynn award as the team's most valuable player. Schwab was named to the All-ACC third-team for the first time in his career after leading the Eagles with 101 tackles this season. An All-ECAC first-team selection, Schwab played the best football of his career as a senior, totaling 8.5 tackles-for-loss and four sacks to go along with two interceptions and a forced fumble this season. Schwab has made 31 starts over his four-year career and played in 47 games for the Eagles, with 179 career tackles.
Â
Senior captain Kamrin Moore received the Coaches' Award, decided upon by head coach Steve Addazio and his staff. The Coaches' Award is given to the player who exemplifies the coaching staff's attitude toward the game; a performer whose style of play reflects what has been taught and sometimes what simply cannot be taught; this is a person with great football instincts. The Maryland native had his productive BC career cut short due to the injury. Moore played in 44 career games with 31 career starts and had started 23 consecutive games prior to his injury.
Â
Senior defensive back Isaac Yiadom was given the Jay McGillis Award, given to the defensive back that best exemplifies the personal qualities of team dedication and leadership by example, an extraordinary competitive spirit and a personal concern for family, friends and teammates. Yiadom is tied for sixth on the team with 51 tackles as the senior started all 12 games for the Eagles in 2017. He is second on the team with seven pass breakups and recorded two interceptions this season.
Â
Senior punter Mike Knoll was presented with the Special Teams Award. Knoll was one of the best punters in the nation in 2017 and was named a midseason All-American by ESPN.com. Knoll averaged 40.2 yards per punt with a long of 63 yards, but his strength was his ability to pin the opposition deep inside its own territory. Knoll totaled 33 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Â
Senior wide receiver Thadd Smith earned the Perseverance Award, given to the player who faces adversity head on and works relentlessly to overcome any obstacle placed in front of them and continually displays mental toughness. Smith was a dangerous weapon for the Eagles on the jet sweep in 2017 as he was third on the team in rushing, highlighted by his 76-yard touchdown run in the 41-10 win at Virginia in October.
Â
Senior defensive back Gabriel McClary was awarded the Paul Cavanaugh Award, given to the player who's collective on and off the field accomplishments speaks volumes about his commitment to balance, a level-headed outlook on life, and perspective on volunteerism, ethics and the community. McClary has played in 45 career games for the Eagles over his four-year career.
Â
Senior defensive end Harold Landry was presented with the Russ Joyner Award for the most outstanding defensive lineman. Landry collected All-ACC third-team honors and All-ECAC second-team accolades after an injury-riddled senior campaign. The North Carolina product played in eight games before an ankle injury forced him to miss the final four games of the regular season. Landry is tied for the team lead with five sacks and ranks second in BC career history with 26.0 sacks. He also earned honorable mention All-America honors by SB Nation in 2017.
Â
Senior defensive lineman Noa Merritt received the Gridiron Club Award as the student-athlete who displays the determination, enthusiasm, and spirit expected from a Boston College football player. Merritt started all 12 games at defensive tackle for Boston College in 2017 and has played the best football of his career during his senior campaign. Merritt totaled 38 tackles this season is among the team leaders with 8.5 TFLs.
Â
For the first time since 1993, Boston College has a chance to win six of its final seven games of the year with a win in the 2017 New Era Pinstripe Bowl against Iowa.
