Eagles fall to Minutewomen in the extra session on Sunday
NEWTON, Mass. – For the second straight game, the No. 9 Boston College field hockey team fell in overtime at home, suffering a 3-2 loss to Massachusetts in the extra session on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Lucy Lytle scored both of Boston College's goals, twice giving the Eagles one-goal leads but the Minutewomen fought back both times to force the extra session.
Â
In overtime – playing up a player because of BC yellow card – Anne Dijkstra caused a turnover just outside the D and beat Eagles goaltender Audra Hampsch with a long shot after Hampsch came way out to cut down the angle.
Â
The loss was BC's second straight in overtime after falling to No. 16 Virginia, 2-1, on Friday night at home.
BC (4-5, 1-2 ACC) returns to the field on Friday, Sept. 30, when the team travels to face No. 2 Duke (8-1, 2-1 ACC). The 6 p.m. game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and WatchESPN.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QUOTEABLE
Head coach Kelly Doton
"Hats off to UMass. Those guys showed up and competed, not only for 70 minutes, but for the whole length of overtime. You could definitely tell their heart and desire. They really wanted to beat us today and they got the end result in overtime. It's unfortunate, but we couldn't get our momentum going. We had some good plays in there. There were some moments where we could've gotten the ball on cage a little bit earlier, but our defense didn't do as well as it has is in the past and it let us down, and UMass came away with a victory."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- GOAL – BC 1, UMASS 0 … 22:55 – Brigid Wood sent a long pass in from near the edge of the D that looked like it was set to go wide of the goal, but Lucy Lytle tipped it in past UMass goaltender Emily Hazard near the far post to put the Eagles ahead 1-0
- GOAL – UMASS 1, BC 1 … 27:52 – Umass' Nicole Miller evened the score when she tipped in Izzie Delario's cross from the left side. Delario surged down the left side and into the D, where she sent a hard pass across the front of the cage for Miller on the doorstep
- GOAL – BC 2, UMASS 1 … 41:24 – On a penalty corner, Frederique Haverhal's shot from the top of the D was deflected high and in the top of the cage by Lytle as she put the Eagles back ahead, 2-1
- GOAL – UMASS 2, BC … 54:23 – After the Eagles' defense blocked the initial shot from distance, the rebound kicked out to UMass' Sarah Hawkshaw who pounded the ball past Hampsch to pull the Minutewomen level again
- GOAL – UMASS 3, BC 2 … 81:22 – Anne Dijkstra stripped a BC defender just outside the D and ran into the area unimpeded. Audra Hampsch came way out to cut down the angle, but Dijkstra found the cage with her low, hard shot to win the game.
