Capizzano and Keller will serve as the Eagles’ assistant captains next year
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Rising senior Andie Anastos will return as captain of the Boston College women's hockey team for the 2016-17 season, head coach Katie Crowley announced on Tuesday. Additionally, rising senior Kristyn Capizzano and rising junior Megan Keller have been voted assistant captains of next year's squad.
Anastos was one of the Eagles' three captains of the Eagles' record-breaking 2015-16 team that advanced to the NCAA Championship game and finished the year with a 40-1-0 record. Anastos enters her senior year ranked 12th on the Eagles' career scoring chart with 102 points (42 goals, 60 assists) in 117 career games.
"Andie was a great leader for us as a junior and I'm excited to have her use that experience to be our captain this year," Crowley said. "She knows how to lead a team and what is important to keep our team going in a positive direction."
Anastos will be the sixth two-year captain in program history, and the first since Deb Spillane in 2006-07 and 2007-08.
Capizzano is the former captain of Canada's Under-18 team that won the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championships. For the Eagles, she has tallied 78 career points (31 goals, 47 assists) in 116 games, which included career highs of 21 assists and 30 points in 41 games.
Keller, the youngest member of the U.S. National Team, was a first-team All-America selection in 2015-16, as well as a top 10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award. While anchoring the Eagles' defense that was ranked third nationally, she also collected 52 points (12 goals, 40 assists) – the program's single-season record among defensemen. She was tied for ninth nationally in scoring and third nationally in assists, while leading all defensemen in scoring in the country.
"Kristyn and Megan are the perfect combination to complement Andie as our captain," Crowley said. "Kristyn has the drive and commitment to our team that embodies what 'BC Hockey' is about. She'll lead by example and show the younger players what it means to play 'BC Hockey'. Megan is a natural leader who is not only talented, but a genuinely nice person, as well. She does things the right way on and off the ice and that will help our team be successful. I'm really looking forward to next year with these three leading us."
The Eagles finished the year with their best-ever final ranking of No. 2 in both the U.S. College Hockey Online and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. The team's 40 wins were the second-most in NCAA history.
The Eagles are set to return 17 players from this year's team, including rising junior goaltender Katie Burt, who is undefeated in Hockey East regular-season play in her career, and rising sophomore Makenna Newkirk, who was the runner-up for the ACHA National Freshman of the Year in 2015-16. Additionally, the Eagles will add seven freshmen, including two-time U.S. Under-18 world medalist and New England prep DI player of the year Caitrin Lonergan.
