Lytle Scores Both in 2OT Win at Providence
October 23, 2016 | Field Hockey
Eagles’ sophomore scores both of the BC goals as team wins second straight
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lucy Lytle scored both of the team's goals as the No. 14 Boston College field hockey team earned a 2-1, double-overtime win over Providence at the Friars' Lennon Family Field on Sunday afternoon.
Lytle's game-winner came with less than 1:00 remaining on the clock before penalty strokes would have been needed. The win pushed BC's overall record to 9-7 on the season. The overtime win also moved the Eagles' record in OT games to 2-3 overall, although this was the team's first double-OT contest of the season. Providence moved to 12-5 on the year.
"First off we need to credit Providence; they're a great team," Boston College head coach Kelly Doton said. "We've been watching them on film and they've been having a really successful year. We knew that we were going to have to come in here with a must-win situation for our postseason aspirations. I was really impressed with the Friars and the way that they played: the 70 minutes of regulation and also overtime, they battled until the end.
"It took us a little bit to get going in the game," Doton continued. "Halftime we adjusted some things and really challenged our players' hearts and their effort. It took them a little bit in the second half, but we came out and battled and the biggest thing is we got the victory. We're going to take that, we'll look at the film and just get better for next weekend."
The Friars took a 1-0 lead just 2:00 into the game when Sylvia Miller streaked into the circle, cut inside and snuck a low shot behind Eagles goaltender Audra Hampsch. That score held through the end of the first half, although both teams had first-half goals called back.
For the Friars, a score off a broken corner was negated when the umpired ruled the initial insertion never came out of the circle. Boston College's apparent goal was called back after time had expired. The Eagles earned a corner and Eryn McCoy's shot beat PC goaltender Megan Guilbert, but the referees claimed it was a high hit and the period ended with the Friars maintaining the 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second half, the Eagles took advantage of another penalty corner opportunity while McCoy was off the field serving a green card infraction and BC was down a player. Lytle got into traffic in front and tipped in Frederique Haverhals' shot off Brittany Sheenan's insertion, tying up the game at 1-1 at 52:44. The set-up by Haverhals gave the center back her team-leading fifth assist of the season.
Neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal in the remainder of regulation, nor in the first 15 minutes of overtime.
In the second overtime session, the Eagles kept Providence pinned in their own half, thanks in large part to six penalty corners – a statistic BC owned in the game, earning a 19-10 advantage in corners.
After 29-plus minutes of extra time and penalty strokes looming, Emily McCoy found space in the circle and created a 2-on-1. With the goaltender out to defend the shot, McCoy pushed the ball over to Lytle on the right post for the deflection and the game-winner with just :52 seconds left. Lytle's goal was her second of the game and her team-leading 11th of the season.
Boston College returns to the field on Thursday, Oct. 27 when the team heads crosstown to face No. 20 Harvard at 6 p.m. at the Crimson's Berylson Field.
