Haverhals Nets Two in Win over No. 16 Wake Forest
October 21, 2016 | Field Hockey
Eagles match best-ever ACC record, moving to 3-3 on the season in league play
NEWTON, Mass. – Center back Frederique Haverhals scored two goals and Lucy Lytle netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season as the No. 14 Boston College field hockey team defeated No. 16 Wake Forest, 3-2, on a rainy Friday night at the Newton Field Hockey Complex.
Â
With the win, BC improved to 3-3 on the season in ACC play, matching its best finish in conference history.
"I think overall it was a great team win," head coach Kelly Doton said. "After the heartbreak on Sunday to come back and in our next game to perform the way we did was great. There were a little bit of dip, but we knew that would happen because Wake Forest is a great team. Any ACC opponent we face is going to bring it. We got on the board early, which I thought was great, but then our defense let us down and we let them right back in the game.  We came out, made some adjustments in the second half which we had to make and we scored that third goal that I thought would put us up 3-1, but there was a little bit of tense moment there the last minute. But our players were smart in handling that and we came away with a great win."
Â
Haverhals' first goal came at the post on the Eagles' second corner of the game. Emily McCoy sent a hard shot into the circle but it was saved and fell right to Haverhals who pushed it past Isla Bint for the 1-0 lead at 20:26
Â
The advantage lasted less than one minute, however, as Nicole Pluta turned around on the restart and beat BC goalkeeper Audra Hampsch with a hard shot from the right side at 21:15.
Â
The teams remained deadlocked through the rest of the first half until the Eagles were awarded a penalty corner with no time left. Lining up at the circle this time, Haverhals connected on a McCoy pass and beat Bint with a low shot, sending the Eagles into the interval up 2-1.
Â
BC maintained its lead deep into the second half before Lytle netted the Eagles' third goal. Brooke Matherson sent Lytle down in the right side where she cut in and sent a rising shot past Blint.
Â
Wake Forest pulled Isla right after Lytle's goal, and with the extra attacker, continued to push. They earned three corners in succession and converted on the final one at 69:39 when Jule Grashoff lifted a shot up over Hampsch off the stop, pulling the Demon Deacons within one with less than one minute to play.
Â
Boston College returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 23, when the team travels to Providence (11-3) for a 1 p.m. game.
