Devlin S-AFE Service Trip: Day 1
January 12, 2016 | Boston College Athletics, Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
The 21 Eagles in New Orleans got going with a project on Baccich St.
For the seventh straight year, Boston College student-athletes are spending part of winter break in New Orleans on the Devlin S-AFE Trip. The week-long trip is centered on community service in partnership with the St. Bernard Project, helping families rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina 10 years ago.
Each day, student-athletes will reflect on the day's activities. For more information about the trip and it's purpose, check out the trip overview.

Working with the St. Bernard Project, we took on our first workday on Baccich Street, New Orleans. We will be spending the next five days immersed in New Orleans' culture and rebuilding an opportunity house, which will help rehabilitate the community by bringing in new families and young couples.
After an early morning wake-up for orientation, we stopped by the house that the group worked on last year. It was so heartwarming to see two different families now living in the finished home. It was so cool being able to see the impact of our service.
Our project this year - and our goal for the end of the week - is to finish dry-walling and mudding our house on Baccich Street. We've made a lot of progress today and the group is getting the hang of measuring and nailing in the drywall. We're all learning new skills!
After spending the morning at our worksite, Tulane Athletics was nice enough to lend us their weight room and the group got in a great workout. Tulane's campus and facilities were beautiful and we are grateful for their hospitality!
Looping back to when we first arrived in New Orleans yesterday, we were given the opportunity to tour one of the country's greatest attractions - the National World War II Museum. It was an eye-opening experience and we were fortunate enough to have a veteran in the crowd. Tomorrow we are all excited to go to the Hurricane Katrina Museum and explore the French Quarter. We can't wait to eat the beignets at Café Du Monde!!
