BC HIGHLIGHTS
- While the Eagles were shut out on offense, the BC defense allowed just a third-quarter field goal in the game. The defense has not given up a touchdown in 10 straight quarters.
- For the sixth time this season, the Eagles held their opponent to under 100 rushing yards, allowing just 26 yards on the ground on the day. It was the 13th time the BC defense did so in 19 games. BC also allowed just 142 total yards on the day. The Eagles have not given up more than 230 total yards in a game this season.
- Sophomore Marcus Outlow led the BC offense with a season-high 62 yards on a career-high 15 carries.
KEY PLAYS
- The Eagles started their first drive of the second half on their own four-yard line and on second-and-10, freshman Jordan Gowins fumbled at the five-yard line giving Wake the ball back.
- The BC defense held the Demon Deacons to a 25-yard field goal but two field goal misses by the Eagles allowed Wake to take the 3-0 victory.
- With just over a minute left in the game, junior Matt Milano forced a fumble at the 11-yard line and senior Justin Simmons recovered to give BC the ball with a chance to win. Freshman Jeff Smith's run was a yard short of the goal line on second-and-eight and junior Tyler Rouse could not punch it in from the one. The Eagles tried to spike the ball for one more chance, but time had expired.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles and Demon Deacons play to a scoreless first half after both teams missed a field goal attempt. On the Eagles' second drive of the game, Smith connected with sophomore Charlie Callinan for a 28-yard pass on second-and-nine to bring it to the Wake Forest 19. After three rushes that amounted to six yards, freshman Colton Lichtenberg's 31-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright with 52 seconds to play in the first quarter.
- On Wake's ensuing possession, Mike Weaver missed a 43-yard field goal attempt.
- The Demon Deacons were the first to score as Weaver hit a 25-yard field goal with 10:18 to go in the third quarter. Gowins fumbled at BC's nine-yard line and Brandon Chubb recovered. The Eagles defense held strong, as sophomore Ty Schwab tallied a tackle for a loss of nine yards on first down and junior Truman Gutapfel deflected Wake QB John Wolford's third-down pass attempt.
- As the game clocked ticked down, the Eagles still had a chance to get on the board. With just over two minutes to go in the game, Wake was called for pass interference to bring the ball to the 34-yard line. Junior Tyler Rouse rushed three times for 26 yards, including a 17-yard run. Flutie lost the ball on a QB sneak looking for the first down on the Deacon's eight-yard line with just over a minute to play.
- On third-and-three at Wake's own 11, Milano forced a fumble, which Simmons recovered giving BC one more chance with 56 seconds to play.
- Rouse rushed for two yards and then Smith went eight, one shy of the goal line. Rouse tried to score the game-winning touchdown from the one with 29 seconds left but was denied. The Eagles tried to get to the line and spike the ball, but time expired and Wake Forest escaped with the win.
