Fred Smerlas '79
- One of the finest defensive lineman ever to play the game,
he earned All-America, All-East, and All-New England honors
during his outstanding collegiate career.
- Co-captain of his team as a senior and played in the Senior
Bowl following his final season at the Heights.
- Played 14 seasons in the National Football League as a
member of the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and New
England Patriots. He played in 200 NFL games including 155
consecutive starts, more than any other nose tackle in
professional football history.
- He was selected to participate in five Pro Bowl games and
was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team in 1979.
- Inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall
of Fame in 1994.
