Getting to know Coach York on my first day

Getting to know Coach York on my first day

Oct. 15, 2013

One year ago this week I had the incredible privilege of being offered the opportunity to come to Boston College. In 365 days there has been a hurricane, a leadership change with our football team, a `noreaster', a national sailing champion, a city/campus lock-down, the Gold Pass, a fourth consecutive Beanpot Championship, Homecoming, an extraordinary commencement weekend, an ACC Tournament-record basketball game, numerous NCAA tournament invitations, changes in gameday experiences, a pep rally and basketball student seating changes.

After one year on The Heights, here are some general observations:

- The University Leadership is forever committed to the motto `Ever to Excel' and that includes intellectual growth and competitive success.
- Boston College students are much smarter than their Athletics Director!
- On nearly every measure of performance - revenue, attendance, championships, student retention - we collectively underperformed last year.
- Boston College Athletics is a sleeping giant; our history informs a vision for our department that can be exceptional.
- Being champions in every aspect of life - as scholars, athletes, servers and leaders - requires unrelenting discipline, tenacious work ethic and collective efforts.
- We must provide our students with a home field/court/ice advantage by establishing a waiting list for tickets.
- Our strategic plan is nearly complete as we await finalization on athletic facility initiatives before publicly releasing.
- Collective efforts far surpass individual attempts and to realize our lofty vision for BC Athletics will take support from all areas of the University community through time, talent or treasure.

There is so much work to be done.

Fortunately, our students, alums and fans have provided great feedback on new initiatives that have been effective and those we need to improve. We have a passionate fan base that is growing in their commitment to supporting our students with their presence at games. Our faculty are among the most distinguished in higher education. Coaches are recruiting exceptional scholars who happen to be extraordinary athletes. We are mobilizing our human and financial resources in ways that align with our priorities and we are using analytics to inform our strategies and decisions.

One year ago I felt an enormous responsibility to our students, faculty, alums, staff and fans. My sense of obligation to you has done nothing but grown in the past year and I am grateful for the opportunity and your support! Our staff is committed to working tirelessly to make you proud to be an Eagle.

We are just getting started!
