Boston College Athletics Unveils New Logos
July 26, 2000
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College officially unveiled new athletic logos today at a noon press conference held on campus. The family of logos creates a new unified image for the Boston College Athletic department and its individual programs.
The new primary logo features an updated eagle with the Boston College word mark. The interlocking "BC" has been renovated with the new Boston College typeface and updated eagle. The new family of logos also includes a secondary mark of an eagle head and a youth mark. Boston College has clearly defined the school's maroon and gold to bring consistency to the color scheme, including both a metallic and non-metallic version of the University's gold. To further enhance the brand, Boston College has designed a word mark for each of its thirty-four sports, internal athletic areas, and the athletic department's booster and support groups. Boston College will continue to use its official seals, verbiage, and other institution logos to represent the College and all of its non-athletic programs.
"Our goal is to create a unified look for Boston College and its athletic teams at home and on the road through uniforms, arena designs and all collateral materials," said Gene DeFilippo, Boston College's Director of Athletics. "We want to be readily identified as Boston College and build equity and recognition through a consistent BC brand."
Football, men's and women's basketball and ice hockey uniforms will feature the new logos this fall. A phase-in plan is in place for all other sports. The new logos will offer Boston College's licensed vendors and Athletic department a more consistent set of logos that will allow for greater flexibility in application while maintaining a unified, branded look. Boston College has defined the pantone ink colors (maroon 202, gold 4515 and metallic gold 871), matching thread colors and textile colors to assure consistency in reproduction of the new marks.
The athletic department has also redesigned its website - bceagles.com - to reflect the new look for the department. It went live today with updated features, information and on-line sales of the new logo merchandise.
Merchandise featuring the new Boston College logos will be available immediately at 13 MVP Sports locations in Massachusetts. For every $50.00 purchase of new logo merchandise at MVP Sports, fans will receive tickets to the BC/UConn football game during the logo introduction promotion. MVP shoppers also will have the opportunity to register to win tickets to the BC/Virginia Tech game. Boston College's on-campus bookstore is also featuring new logo merchandise. Plans are in place for a Boston College athletic logo merchandise program with nine Bob's Stores in Massachusetts to be launched next month.
The new logos were developed by SME Design of New York after extensive research and compilation of what the College believes is the essence of the institution. SME Design has updated and developed new logos for nearly 300 collegiate and professional sports programs including Stanford, Villanova University, the University of Florida, and the University of North Carolina.
All of the new logos are controlled under a licensing program administered by The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) of Atlanta. The CLC Consortium consists of more than 180 universities, bowl games, athletic conferences, the Heisman Trophy, and the NCAA. Royalties and licensing fees accrued through this avenue are returned to Boston College to help support University-wide programs and services.
